Hi all,
I am a rising senior this year which means I will be going through the college application process and will be filling out the common application.
I took part in a scientific research and the research got published on a journal! but the problem is, my author name on the research paper is my “preferred name” and not my legal name. My legal name is my korean name (preferred name is my english name).
How would I prove to colleges that I took part in this research without having my legal name on the published research paper? (my family name is a typical Korean family name so it won’t validate anything).
Would it not matter if I indicated my preferred name on the common app?
It won’t matter. You list both you legal name and preferred name of the common app.
@skieurope Although we list both our legal name and preferred name on the common app, is it better to be consistent with which name we use? I experienced the same thing as the OP xD
It does not matter in most instances. Like I said, you list both on the common app. I’d suggest using your legal name when signing up for SAT/ACT. But on day-to-day stuff, it does not matter. Your recs will probably refer to you by your preferred name. Colleges will figure it out as it happens frequently. Jose is known as Pepe, Edward is called Ted, etc.
