Research Scholars Program?

My DD was just accepted to UF Honors and selected for the Research Scholars Program and offered a $2000 award. Can anybody provide more detail on what that is. My older daughter is at UF Honors, but neither she nor any of her friends were accepted with the extra $2000 award and this program. Is the money tied to the program? Is this a new program? Can you accept Honors and not the Research Scholars? Whats required as far as additional classes/time of Research Scholars? Thanks. Go Gators!

I was wondering about this also. I have an order daughter in UF Honors that did not receive this. However, my daughter who just got in also didn’t get it but most of her peers did. I wonder if it’s because she’s undeclared.

I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough. But I was hoping somebody on here had some early answers.

My d is a freshman at UF and is in this program. The first semester they all take a research class in an auditorium setting that introduces them to research at UF, meets one day a week I believe. Second semester, they are split into groups of around 15 and placed with a professor doing current research. There they get more individual instruction. My d is currently learning about the scientific method from UF faculty doing research on honeybees. She even got to put on the bee suit and go out to the hives. I believe next semester, they will help them all find spots doing real research with a UF professor. She is in the inaugural class that this was offered to, and we still don’t have a lot of info on it tbh.

@tif1972 - Thanks for the information. Sounds like an interesting program.

Our daughter is also a freshman in this program and took the introductory course the first semester like tif1972 said. The second semester she selected a research class based on Big Data and is really enjoying it. She tells me the goal of the program is to be working on a research project by sophomore year. She has another friend in the program who knew exactly what he wanted and was accepted by a professor as a freshman so he’s currently doing research and not a class. My daughter wanted more time to decide, so there is that flexibility. She also knows people that took the first class and dropped. Congratulations to your new Gators!

My son is also a freshman, and, after the introductory classes and orientation, he is doing research on brains of mice through the medical school. He agreed to 12 hours/week of research in order to participate. He just started the research this semester, and he is enjoying it so far. Obviously, he has agreed to a big time commitment, but he wanted to get into medical research.
