Research/Science Competitions

I am plan to pursue a career in physics, and I would like to prepare for college by participating in research internships/jobs and/or science competitions. I am unsure what among these would be best to pursue, or what all is available in the realm of science competitions. I am aware that aiding a professor in their research is an option for high school students, but I am curious about how common/available such opportunities are, and what level of preparation is recommended. I live in Wisconsin if that affects the availability of competitions.
