Where do you get the equipment -- do you pay for everything yourself? Or do you work in someone else's lab? Micropipettes, for instance, are horrendously expensive.

2k4 caltechoid checking in

Hey, everyone. I went to RSI '04 @ MIT. Feel free to ask me questions, and good luck to those applying for RSI '05.

if your post script was directed at me, I wasn't trying to ask any 'stupid questions'. Just whether or not there was any special information/insight anyone could give me about students from hawaii.

And especially to see if there is anyone else from Hawaii, here..

I don't think anyone from Hawaii is here, but 2 students from Hawaii went to RSI this year- one at MIT and one at Caltech. The girl at MIT was incredible...she had so much research experience and was just a ridiculously talented computer programmer.

Do you know where she wants to go to college? Just curious.. :-)

I think she wants to go to MIT. I'm talking about Kim btw...I just read some of the previous posts and found that you already know her, lol.

yay more rickoids to help out prori (yes i coined this term, prospective rickoids = prori)

they will very helpful in the next 3 months. and yes i agree with stefan, don't ask stuff dealing with stats because we're not the admission committee.

"Where do you get the equipment -- do you pay for everything yourself? Or do you work in someone else's lab? Micropipettes, for instance, are horrendously expensive."
I wish I paid for my $100,000 GC/MS machine! Work in another lab.

By any chance do you guys how many intl Indians were there at RSI this year??

hmmm...3 intl indians. they were all cool! I think 2 of them are going to ITT!!!

do u by chance mean IIT?

o ya i'm sorry, ITT, lol i wrote it at 3:15 in the morning so my mind DEFINITELY wasn't straight...

I'm freshmen. I'm not really interested in RSI yet because they only accept rising senior. However, I am interested in research. I hope to enter my state's science fair this year. Does any research-veteran have any advice on getting some research experience "under my belt." and how did you decide what topic you would pursuit as a research project?

try to apply to a local research internship over the summer

volunteer at a local research lab

these 2 things will get you connected to influential people who will hopefully mentor you.

most of the time, you don't "decide" the topic you want to pursuit. I guess you can choose a branch like molecular biology or organic chemistry, but you can't really CHOOSE what your research topic is because...honestly, right now, you don't have that choice yet.

lol i remember staticsoliloquy on these forums last year ^^
i got rejected from RSI btw, ended up going to this other mathematics program.

and STASTERISK, i used to live in hawaii, moved to cali 5 years ago. what school do you go to? i know someone from hawaii who went to RSI '02 i think, or '01 or '03 can't really remember. she's at MIT right now, and she used to go to Iolani. i miss Hawaii...

Staticsoliloquy, I live in massachuesetts but not around the Boston area where all the research labs are. I wanted to apply to Tufts' Health Science Honors program to gain some contacts but the program only accepts juniors and seniors. In a month or two, I'll be volunteering at my local hospital but its not one which is involved in research. I have been looking in the internet for any research programs in MA for high school students but, I found none. Any advice on how I would find research labs to volunteer at. Right now, I'm working I'm researching topics for my state's science fair.

just start emailing scientists at local labs or independt research institute...it'll be hard, but it's worth it.

Thanx, I will.

When the app asks for standardized test scores, do we have to send an official report from ETS? (And how would you do that?) Or can we send a copy of the ones we get in the mail?

i sent copies and they didnt seem to have a problem with that
