Research Science Institute 2005

Wrath of God, aren't you the guy that won DuPont's essay contest? If so, well, at least I'm in good company :D

yea, lol i wish the results came out early enough to somewhat affect my application though. Rejection is hard...especially for someone that's been wanting to go to this program for 2 years.

Ah. At least you had a good shot of getting into RSI, and still a good shot at getting into a school like MIT. Could be worse. You could be me, for instance.

^what's wrong with you? [haha, that sounded rude, oops]

wrathofgod: true, rejection is tough; but RSI isn't the end all and be all. If anything, I'm just glad I applied because I wouldn't be able to deal with thinking that I passed up the chance of a lifetime.

Let's just say that compared to all of you guys...if I'd gotten accepted, I would've wondered what the hell was wrong with whatever comittee did the reviewing. :D

i highly doubt that.
I'm thinking the vast majority of those who applied stood some sort of chance, and will stand a chance at the Ivies.
Plus - the way you write, you seem smart.

lol seriously zoogies, being a junior at age 14 is an accomplishment in and of itself. when i was 14 i was in 8th grade twiddling my thumbs in honors geometry.

Heh. Writing gets better with absurd amounts of practice. I have spent an obscene amount of time on various message boards to practice my writing. RSI, on the other hand, is a math/science thing. People at my school (cough like my guidance counseller, who thought I would get in for sure cough) don't really get it, because they think I'm a math person. Well, yes, but I don't have anywhere near the crazy credentials most of you have. My 'list any awards you have won in math/science' and 'list any extracurriculars that show your passion for math/science' sections were...well. ;)

Top 50 in the country? Heh. Not a chance. Not that I would be complaining, if I'd been accepted, of course ;) Hopefully, you're right, and MIT will say, "This guy is incredibly uber." From there, it's a matter of luck.

True, but nobody's going to make it any easier to get into any college. Age really doesn't matter that much. Besides, behold my school's math and science course list: Intro sci. Bio. Chem. Physics. Anatomy and Physiology. A&P is pretty cool, but all of these courses are half-year. No Physics II, no Physics AP, or anything. Same for math. I was lucky enough to get into the last calculus course, before they axed it. :D

I have like...no awards in math/science. The one award I can remember I put down was getting 4th place in NH for a Rotary Speech contest. My speech happened to be about genetic engineering and biomedical research and the posibilities it holds for the future. lol....
of course, I made that sound nice. The thing I liked about this application was that you didn't need to list it. You could go into a fancy explanation to make whatever you have sound like you won the Nobel Prize.

Hehe. Yep. I did about as good a job as I could explaining that there were no science or math related ECs of any sort, and nor would starting one be feasible.

Ah, I did a project in 5th grade about Albert Einstein. I dressed up as Einstein to present it and all. If only I glorified that...nah :P

lol...
well...something of that sort in high school could have been glorified. I managed to do that....
Seriously, I explained how I did a Religion (I go to a Catholic school) project on eugenics. My angle was basically taht I incorporated biological sciences into every part of my academic and extracurricular life.
In my opinion, it was complete BS, but apparently it wasn't that bad, considering I wasn't outright rejected....

Hi, RSI threaders!

LadyinRed- you're looking at a fellow alternate. and you're right. it's a funny feeling--because you're not really satisfied, but at the same time you don't feel entitled to be devastated--alas...

Until "mid-May," whatever that means...

note to self: resist holding vigil around telephone during May. must keep sane.

btw, did they mention how many "alternates" they designated?

Ah. I ought to take lessons from you ;)

I'm just kicking myself for managing to forget every single other summer program in existence - MITE2S, or whatever it's called...and NASA SHARP, zogoto was kind enough to remind me (a few months too late! haha, just kidding...). I might not have gotten in (unless I took BS lessons from LadyinRed), but still, I could've at least tried. Oh well. UMass lowell summer band camp. Looking forward to playing six hours a day. :)

Heh. :P

that's 2 of 5 apparently...

sighh...
I'm crossing my fingers. Miracles can happen, right?

it's a very funny feeling. Almost depressing. I just keep thinking, what could I have done that would have tipped me in? Why wasn't I good enough? Maybe it I just had a higher SAT score...

yep LadyinRed, that's exactly what i'm thinking.

Same here. Except it's more on the lines of, "Boy, I really wish I could go back in time."

lol...I tell all my friends, I pride myself on being the Queen of BS....
Seriously, though, that's the one thing I can truly say I'm good at. Making absolutely nothing sound like something great.

I was thinking about applying to MITE2S...then I didn't...meh...isn't that for underrepresented minorities?
And Nasa Sharp just doesn't seem like my thing. Outerspace is too far away for me...RSI was just perfect....sighh

yea, that's exactly what i started thinking too right after i read the rejection letter. immediately questions start popping into your mind like *** do they want? *** did i do wrong?

just outta curiosity, anyone here applied to the Jackson Lab internship program?
