well go to siemens-founation.org...and search around for the MIT region and lookfor the national winner....the project was completed at home without the help of a mentor

I was in the western region. And the individual winning project was a machine that turns wave energy into electricity and it was built in the kid's garage with parts from an old toaster and a bicycle or something. I hung out w/ the kid for 3 days. I feel so connected. Kind of like a rickoid. oooo

How specific was/are your subtopics? examples?

mine was "Developmental Biology: Stem Cell" for rsi 04 app

so is it true that standardized test scores and grades can only help you in RSI admissions? no answer to this really. There are many who applied with 1600s/1500s and get rejected..there were 2 rickoids last yr who both got in the low 1300s (myself included)

What is the point of doing research in high school? Maybe they should hold students to the same standards that they do for professionals in the field, otherwise it seems pointless to lead them to think that they are actually doing something worthwile. (There are some very good projects but most of them, even some that make the finals, are trivial.)

It's not always about fame and recognition when a student chooses to pursue research. Some of us just find it so darn interesting. Some of us learn better hands-on. Some of us just want to further our studies in science by researching. No project is ever trivial, even though that didn't prove the hypothesis because it eliminates one possibility. Huge contributions are a result of many little projects.

How am I supposed to send a copy my PSAT score?....I only have that huge newspaper looking thing. Do they want just the top portion or the whole thing..or do I just list my scores and have no back up to my claims?

^^ i absolutely agree with you on this. I don't do research for the money. if it were for the money, i'd go do something else like violin which i've been doing for the past 14 years of my life. i do research because i love it and it's SO INTERESTING! learning about all these new topics and such...

bayesguy-i'm not sure about an answer to your question (since i'm applying this year too) however, i'm going to copy that first page that lists my verbal/math/writing scores plus the total and send that in along with writing them down on the app. sorry i couldn't help you any more...

no problem, btw what research field are you in?

Yeah, what are everyone's fields? I'm Enviro. Sci. and Mathematics. Can't choose between what to put on the app...Yes, I'm weird.

just send in the top portion of your PSAT scores for proof.

So, given that there is no more RSI at Caltech, doesn't this decrease the student acceptance to 50 in the united states? I assume this is correct, and it kind of scares me :)

bayesguy & zogoto-where are yall from? oh trust me, i don't talk southern in real life, it's just easier to type online =) but to answer yall's question, i'm putting down either environmental science or environmental engineering. frankly, is there really that much of a different between the two? My field (if i competed at intel isef) would be under environmental sciences. what did/are yall doing?

wow, are they really decreasing acceptance rate to 50? I heard that they were accepting 80 this year from some source, don't remember. 80 or 50, i'm scared for my life.

hahahha...I really hope I'm wrong!!!!!!!

My primary field is Physics:sustainable energy generation
and second is Computer Science: computer vision
I wanted to do somethign woth neuroscicen for my secondary, but I have a great deal of experience with computer sciecne research

were any of you other hopefuls at the NCSSSMST student conference
and anyone else putting down
Computer Science: Programming Languages? (type theory rocks!)

i don't know how many they're accepting this year.

didn't that conference like cost a couple thousand...or was that CYLSF (or whatever the it was..)...
Type theory!!---thats actually pretty cool stuff!!
"hello"+"schemer" + 5
return false;

Mol. Bio guy here.

ohhh, do we put 2 fields, a primary and a secondary?

how many of you have already sent yours out? not me, that's fo sho

what's... NCSSSMST and CYLSF?

yea, so I think u can put like enviro as primary and math as secondary

oh i'm sorry i got u confused woth zogoto, I'm really sorry
