Research Science Institute 2005

It's another highly selective program for the humanities. They mail out applications based on PSAT scores. I was curious as to whether RSI does the same.

Hey I'm kinda weird- I'm really into math stuff but I don't know if I'll end up pursuing math or business in college. I am applying to RSI and for the long-term goals, should I mention that I am interested in business? Will RSI be less likely to choose me if I don't necessarily want to become a scientist or engineer? Should I focus on my math passion or do they really care what you want to be when you grow up?

So you can still send in Jan SAT scores?

Yes, static said earlier that they will be understanding.

Wow...Alice listed me when giving thanks and I was right next to the names of 2 rickoids...my life goal is complete....

and frankenchris, I don't mean stats as in SAT and such, I mean had you won any awards or anything? What was your RSI hook? for example, static had the nih grant.

zogot-nih grant? wow, i'm absolutely clueless on all that yall're talking about. aww, i wasn't listed X____X guess i'm not up to RSI standards then =(

question: i scored high on last year's SAT math section but horrible on my verbal section. when i retook it in december, i scored well in english but i didnt' get the same high score as i did in math. should i copy both of those sat scores and send both of them? or copy both of them and cut out math/verbal?

don't worry...RSI didn't send me a letter either!

oy...just send your scores!

Yeah, no one answered my previous question: Do we just list our SAT scores, or do we have to provide some sort of authentication (such as photocopies of the thing that we get in the mail w/ our score on it)?

And btw nih = National Institutes of Health and they have some program where they give research grants to HS students. Static was a winner of the grant last year.

zogoto-i'm not 100% sure, but I'm pretty sure you copy them also. Atleast that's what I'm doing, just in case we're supposed to and i don't have it copied.

ohhh so static won nih's grant. there's only one awarded each year? and is it only to students who do projects health related?

haha, i think we should all get on aim and have a massive RSI chat =) *i'm stupid, sry... *

sure, why not?

you guys can always chat on here :)

Oh, just for those who were interested, I sent you the copies of the paper already

Should all of the "top 3-5 most interesting questions" pertain to the subfield, or to the field in general? Can they be very specific questions, or should they be broader? Also, how much is RSI expecting you to know about these questions/topics?

Oh also- would it be OK to write a paragraph for each of the two fields/subfields, in which I mention numerous questions and why they interest me, or would it be better to list each question separately in its own paragraph?

lengths vary widely, I know someone that had to do 8 pt font to get it all in the 3 page limit... but i didn't break two pages. These questions are getting into the silly nit picky stuff, if they don't say, then use your head!! As long as they can read it, it makes sense, you've said everything they want to hear and everything you want to say, its good.

If I'm not mistaken, 3 kids win the NIH grant a year.

And yes, I am not clear on what to do with the 3-5 questions either. Do we do them if they pertain the field, or subfield? And do we do them for the primary field/subfield AND the secondary, or just the primary?

yea i know sorry I think I'm obsessing over this now...time for a deep breath

I just answered the "3-5" with my first choice sub field. They're not exactly looking at your knowledge of a specific field here.

crazywxyz1- i'm obsessing too! join da club =)

haha, those questions. i haven't even thought of em. T____T

frankenchris, I sent you the paper
