Research Science Institute 2005

they MUST receive the app by 2/9, meaning you can do an overnight service on 2/8, but of course that would cost money.

we don't know how much weight is in each area.

sigh...

Unlike a lot of people here, I live in a rural area of Colorado..not much internship/research stuff goes on here, nor is it offered.

As a sophomore, the only "my time" thing that I've done is participate in a university hospital program in the summer, with once a month...yes a MONTH for like 5 hrs.

Guess I don't even stand a chance...o well I still have hope. :/

P.S. to any former RSI students, what does it mean doing research? Just think of a topic you want to research on and write a paper? I'm kidn of confused about the whole "own research" thing...

Does anyone remember Pharoah from the old board last year? Static? Do you know him? He was in a similiar situation, but he persevered and he got RSI too. You might want to talk to Pharoah.

yea, i remember he built lasers in his spare time or something.

I am 90% positive that pharoah="Rick04" and hates CC, so ie might be hard to talk to him...

pharoah(lyn) hates CC, so yeah...

How could anyone hate CC?!?!

In any case, I'm sure pharoah (or lyn or rick04 or whoever) would be glad to help.

there are many reasons to hate CC!

luckily they aren't in this thread :-P

notice all these new people are posting on the RSI thread...people just finding out about RSI?

notice all these new people are posting on the RSI thread...people just finding out about RSI?

^ I just realized that CC, full of nerds as it is, MUST MUST MUST have a large, info-filled thread about RSI, and I was correct in my time of need.

I just thought of something since my friend who is applying to rsi just did it. This friend has no research experience what so ever, but is a really good application writer. He did a couple hours of research on a field and made some questions that make him sound realllllly smart and like he knows what he's doing. If the purpose of #2 is to make sure you know your field, what stops ppl from doing something like this? I feel lousy now since my questions are really questions I'll consider studying starting this April and come from the 40+ papers and articles I have read about them, and so they are not giant things that make the applicant sound really smart like my friend, who knew nothing about his field whatsoever a few hours ago?

Also, I just realized I spelled a word wrong on my application. Do you think that they will flame me for an extra "i" somewhere in a word?

zogoto! take a deep breath and calm down. it's totally all right, seriously. i'm sure my essays were not-perfect, who'se essays ARE perfect? no one's, so it's totally fine.

you're done with it and you tried your best, that's all you should think about now. =)

How did your friend decide to apply to RSI so suddenly and then just make up knowledge about fields? Doesn't he know that RSI will see right through that? If he doesn't have a real interest in science, why is he applying? What is this so called field that you can sound really smart in after only a few hours anyway?

No field that I'm aware of! They all have their distinct terminology that can only be used correctly when coupled with actual knowledge of the subject matter. A person can only write naturally about a topic with that knowledge, any ******** should be naturally obvious to a person familiar with the subject matter. (I could trot out the example of a person's application from my school last year, but that would be mean)

cool, automatic censoring!

cool, automatic censoring! <-- dork =P

why did your friend look up info about stuff he didn't know about anyway? are you planning on doing the same zogoto?

lol I didn't kno much about my topics either but I knew I liked them a while ago. I spent a lot of time over many months reading journals and I had to read more and more once I tried to write about it. in 2 hours though, I think it'd be kind of hard to suond very smart unless he is really good at speed-reading. hehe automatic censoring!!!

zogoto: yes RSI will see right through that, the RSI admissions committee it made up of some amazing people! He doesn't have a chance.

Also, I forgot to inlcude a word in the first sentence of the abstract of my paper I submitted to this competetion, and I still did fine!
People will forgive spelling mistakes.

I make it a habit to never reread something after I've sent it. That way I don't curse myself for my stupid mistakes! :-)

lol I do that too...once I turn it in TOO BAD! I don't look at it. I just hate when I do that on tests, like the PSAT sigh oh well. I'm too busy to study that junk much

Well my friend is a very good bs-er, and he is very intelligent. Nevertheless, I wouldn't be able to see through his questions and see that he basically copied some websites.
