Research Science Institute 2005

Static, I'm considering applying to an NiH internship. However, I will not be able to participate in a intraumarul position. How may I find extraumarul NiH interniships in MA?

NOOOOOOO. Its a conspiracy i tell you.

sigh....... defeat.......

hides in the horribly shameful post #1001 coner

edit: dang I really suck, make that 1003

Are you allowed to do individual research on your own? ( Do you know any one who did) if you have the resources to carry them out etc.

How do you PROVE to them(CEE) your experiments and results?

gives franken some green T

accepts T in gracious defeat...

in an attempt to stay helpful...

SourApplezz: of coures you can! show them a paper/data/source code. I wrote a genetic algorithm and just popped it in with the app like "here ya go". They might have never read it though...

How did you guys pack all the papers?

I'm thinking about arranging everything in a manilla envelope, put the manilla in the real envelope, and send that.

They said they didn't want anything stapled, so I'm worried about all those loose papers :P

sonar-loose papers are just fine, they're not gonna throw yours out cause you didn't staple something.

sourapplpe-do you have independent research?

paper clips are fun ^_^ and useful

I didn't staple anything or have any paper clips! AHH I'M GOING TO BE REJECTED!!!

oh wait....

tells franken to be helpful, not a dorkus

KEKEKE, good luckos

Not really...I'm still new on this thing. Ahhh confusing confusing~~~

I've been thinking about carrying out an experiment of my own to test something I've always questioned in my bio class. But this just sounds like a waste of time, since I'm hearing that you need "mentorship" of some sort.

So what exactly is independant research? (yea, stupid question I know,)

When you type your research, (you do this from scratch, yes?) what format do you use?

hah, franken, you forget that I am not mr. zogoto ;)

There’s not exactly one set format, but there might be a standard. Just look at one or two papers in your field (references are great) to see how they do it. If you want REALLY cool papers write them in LaTeX, but that’s an art in itself :-P

Independent research is just research guided by you. It’s your original contribution to the body of scientific knowledge.

You defiantly DON'T need a mentor although it can help. Also, the involvement levels of mentors widely vary. The two brothers that won first in siemens this year or last did the research in their garage. They still had to have someone sign off as a “mentor” for the competition though. So some official mentor with a lab isn't an exact necessity, but it can be difficult to do any real and credible research without (this can be even truer for some fields such as biology). My guess is whatever you heard in biology is already proven somewhere, so it wouldn't exactly be research unless you're examining some previously unknown aspect of it.

thats all just my humble opinon of course!

There xine, is that good enough at not being a dorkus? :-P

haha I say it passes as certified non-dorkiness.
well, the USPS website says my item was delivered at 11:11 AM and signed for. woot :)
ahh green tea. who here wants boba?!

Mentors are generally STRONGLY recommended because its hard otherwise to quickly pick up knowledge in an area, and also because many areas such as biology require access to lab equipment to do research.

For areas which do not by and large require laboratory equipment, such as math or computer science, it can suffice to have one or more professors who you correspond with via email.

And as Frankenchris said, LaTex is key. I WOULD NOT have been able to do my project this year justice were it not for the fantastic capabilities of LaTex (I just realized that the RSI threads for the past 2-3 years have misspelled LaTex).

nods to the scheme master

edit: whoa wait LaTeX has been misspelled?

latex? Raises hand i know what that is!!! hehe

i'm up for some boba, bluephish =)

sonar = zogoto? why the two sn's?

sourapple: mentors are highly suggested, but not everyone can get a hold of one. you may conduct independent research meaning messin round somewhere on your own and stuff and still produce magnificant results. have you app'd yet?

I'm pretty certain, though I'll have to go back to look (which I don't feel like doing),
that just like xinerz, the threads on the old board wrote latex instead of LaTex.

it's quicker to write it latex instead of LaTex. and plus, who uses that ol thing? i know i certainly don't. microsoft word baby! ^^
