Research Science Institute 2005

Wow. I want to go to Caltech so bad. It has been my first choice for months now. Funny, aren't you talking about "The Feynman Lectures on Physics?" That is the one used by Caltech currently, and I bought the three volumes! Hahahah. . .

oops, or maybe it was the lectures. i forgot! it's been two months! cut me some slack, i've done apps since then =P

"Static and Franken, it would also be nice if u two can share with us ur first reaction to seeing ur RSI acceptance letter."

It was passing period between classes and I got to my AP US HISTORY class early and phoned home. My mom said, "You got a big envelope from CEE." I didn't scream because I was in school, but I jump up and down a few times. Hug a few people really hard. Took a bathroom pass and left the class for 20 minutes. I quickly, and i mean quickly because I had so much energy, to the counseling center to tell my counselor. And we did our screams. Then I ran through the quads and down the classroom halls to find my two recommenders and THANK the heck out of them. Then I went back to an hour and 30 minutes of pure us history lecture. It was so hard to sit still in class. My body was all warm and I was energetic I seriously didn't listen to anything he was saying and my ming drifted into the future. I thought about all the possibilities, the experiences, the freedom, etc. After school, I told all of my friends and I came home to check the envelop and it was just awesome!

ah, so there is a big/small envelope. That means that opening the mailbox is the climax ....

Yeah I was wondering about that too.

Oh man I'm getting nervous about making it, I kind of want to know now, but I kind of want to postpone it as much as I can lol.

it's like college!! big envelope good. small envelope. you suck.

good luck to everybody! no wait, i need it more. takes it back =DDDD

hahahaha last year, evidently a lot of people from CC got in!

maybe theyre on the forums, watching us lol

So when do we know? Last week in march?

To the best of your knowledge, about how many students apply to RSi every year for those 80 slots?

should be. watch it be an evil early april fool's joke [on me] whichever my decision will be, it will be cruel shakes fist

i heard 1200-ish?

Ah..Feynman is great. "The inside of a computer is dumb as hell, but it goes like mad!" For some reason I always think of that quote.

Are you guys familiar with his "there's plenty of room at the bottom?" The guy (along with Drexler) pretty much created the field wherein I am working - nanotechnology and molecular computation...

Hmm...I have "Surely you are joking, Mr Feynman" and "The dancing Wu Li Masters" lying around...I should get to read them sometime.

what are the dancing wu li masters about? i've heard about the book, but i'm not quite sure about the story plot.

i have this book that some kid that went to caltech to hold an office a couple doors down from feynman wrote. it's titled "Feynman's Rainbow" and it's incredibly interesting because it's about feynman's older days and from another person's point of view. i need to go reread that one. but i highly suggest anything feynman, read it. he's my absolute hero/idol/hero/model/hero/hero/hero Numero dos, closely behind my hero numero uno.

I've got a question... I don't know if I should make a new thread or whatever for this... but here's the case.

I'm currently a sophomore taking AP biology and physics, I'm thinking about applying for RSI next year, but I'm not taking any science courses next year because of scheduling problems. Also, I have not done any research so far, although I'm planning on doing some over the summer at my local college. Are my chances basically nil right now? I'd really like to do this, so I'm starting research now, but I'm guessing it may be a bit late? My SAT/PSATs are just the norm, 1400-1500 range, maybe higher if I study more.

ooo, you're one of the n00bies that drop by once in a while and pester us with stupid questions that can't be answered =P

joking joking of course

none of us (so i speak for only myself) know who's gonna get into rsi (but i'm pretty sure none of us really do know who's gonna get in) if you really want to get into this program and you show that you have an avid interest in researching in your essays, then chances are they probably will let you in. from what i've heard, it's all in the essay.

but you might want to wait till franken or static gets in here =)

watch me come back in two weeks (yes, i know it's too early) getting a rejectd letter. therefore making my advice nil. but i'd like to help anyway. =) good luck !!!! no, i take that back. i need it more than you do

You know what? You guys are all figments of my imagination. I am the only person who exists. Therefore, I must necessarily be the person getting into RSI.

heh, yeah. I know alotta people don't "know" how they get in and all. I'm kind of a n00bie to this whole thing heh, I just found out about RSI a few weeks ago(rather say eh? :)). I just feel that I've started research and stuff way too late :(. It would be so much easier if they based things purely on SAT scores :), then I could just cram cram cram.

NO!!!! NO BASING ON SAT SCORES!! BAD BAD BAD

i like the way they do it: scores a bit, resume, and essays. gives me more of a cushion to fall back on (for kids like me who don't do as well in standardized testing as others)

gah... my resume is so lacking in research related things at the moment, when did you start with your research?

Basing it on SAT scores wouldn't work. Nearly 1000 people scored 1600, and they admit 80...
