Research Science Institute 2005

time for what?

I've been experimenting with making my own liquid fuel rockets, lasers(rather simplistic nitrogen lasers I guess - nothing like the death star laser ;) ), and other things like tesla coils and stuff like that. I've also done some computer related stuff and am messing around with some augmented reality stuff. I'm rather interested in these area, but I don't think these would be considered traditional RSI areas(computers and projectiles as opposed to the traditional stuff like biology etc.).

I'm wondering if any of this stuff carries any weight, I'm doing most of this stuff for fun, but I'm wondering if I should be diverting some of my attention to other more technical things - i.e. biology and things like that(I'm pretty close to clueless about bio atm :)). Should I start doing "serious" research or would this stuff qualify? This is the first time I've actually considered this stuff "research" since its mostly been for fun.

You want to "divert some of your attention to other technical things - i.e. biology and things like that"? Nope sir, you shouldn't do that. Be yourself, and stay the way you are.

JMHO.

haha, love h88's response =)

ditto to it

Do they consider this stuff science? I mean, its not traditional... And there is no mixing of chemicals or anything like that stuff thats associated with traditional science. I don't really keep "research journals" or what not, on any of this stuff, and I don't think I'm exactly a ground-breaking pioneer in the laser/rocket field either...

I've never considered this to be anything "serious" just weekend fun stuff - other people hang out with their friends, I work on my tesla coils and lasers lol(okay, I hang out with friends too :P).

Anyways, I'm mostly looking for people who can help me with stuff like that. Does RSI have mentors involved in that area?

dude read the program description. there's people working in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, cognitive science. You may be interested in talking to Pharaohl97 from the old boards since he did some experimentation on his own in lasers and got into RSI.

Hmmm, does he still hang around on these forums?

i believe he hates collegeconfidential, maybe you can ask staticsoliloquy on ways to contact him since he's friends with him.

sentient89...you're fine. you're not conforming, you're doing it because you're curious and you love it. what better reason is there to research?

Finally I've decided to read "Surely you must be joking, Mr. Feynman" today. In fact, I dropped the homework that are due tomorrow morning and instead devoted the whole day to finishing the entire book. It was too interesting to put down...

Anyway, I came across the part where he is visiting Japan. An english-speaking Japanese waitress came to visit him and said to him, "Would you rike to see the garden?" And it dawned on me...Engrish existed at that time! This book is simply amazing.

dude, i speak chinglish at home and at school (where there exists only white kids). it's gotten to the point where all my friends basically know what i'm talking about =)

What's Chinglish?

Haha yeah I finished it. I guess I'm going to get the other one too.
uh.... chinese + english = chinglish

And you meant that you speak that on purpose, for the reason of...?

Hmm...when I think about it, I could understand the origin of Engrish (a particular system of Romanji uses the Roman "R" for the Japanese L sound, so you just change "L" to "R") but Chinglish just sounds downright offensive...

What's Chinglish?

Its a mix of Chinese and English. From what I understand, I think its like you say like part of the sentence in English/Chinese then filling in some words with the other language. Usually I speak chinglish at home too :P, I try to speak chinese, but I can't remember some words heh.

edit: bit late. I don't think its intentional, sometimes you just can't think of the words :).

lol intentionally?

i'm just used to it. i speak it at home cause um, i'm taiwanese but sometimes it's quicker to say some other words in english. and i'm just used to speaking it at school cause i carry it over from the home.

I am trying to imagine speaking that at school...
Hmm...not going to work.

well, since you don't speak chinese.... then i guess you can't =P
