Research Science Institute 2007

:) BUMP :) tententen

My S is already working with a professor in Havard Medical School for the last two year and he is planning to work on the same project this summer. Can he apply for RSI 2007 and keep work in the same lab?

but - if he has research lined up at a lab in harvard, why take up an rsi slot? 3 years of research at harvard med school's gotta be as prestigious as rsi.

that's a good idea, tokenadult, but i don't know how to move it :(

Just head on over to the new place. I'm sure it will show the contrast with TASP more clearly to be posting in the RSI 2007 thread in the Summer Programs Forum. Now that College Confidential has a summer programs forum (which it didn't, last year), I would expect people looking for information on cool summer programs like the Research Science Institute to post on the Summer Programs Forum.

As before, best wishes to all of this year's applicants.

Hey all.

For question 3:
Would it be a good idea to put things such as AIME qualifier and AP Scholar With Honor even if I'm doing science research (not math)?

I'm self studying AP Chemistry and Environmental Science. Is there anything i should additionally submit to prove that I'm taking these AP exams and won't back out later?

Finally, for the school transcript: I took some SATs in middle school that I don't want RSI to see (since obviously the scores are low, and I foolishly took some subject tests as well), is it alright to ask my school to omit those scores from my transcript? (the grades and all high school SAT scores would still remain). Since the requirements ask for an official school transcript, is everyone mailing everything via the school? If so, what day are you guys planning to get this thing out? I was thinking Feb. 1, but knowing my school they will probably mail it out too late :(

I posted this in another board, but you guys seem more helpful :P

Do we have to send in our PSAT scores or SAT scores?

I haven't taken the SAT - planning to take it in March.
However, I'm not satisfied by my PSAT score AT ALL. >_<
I was planning on taking the ACT on Feb. 10 and sending that instead, but I recently got the chance to participate in the science bowl comp. at JPL, and I really would rather do that.

Is it okay if I take the SAT math 2 and SAT biology and ONLY send that in...I would assume the PSAT is largely so they can see how you did on the math section, so if I score well on the SAT Math L2...do I have to send in my (190) PSAT score in?

I live in CA. I would have signed up earlier for the SAT in Jan. to avoid this mess, but I just got my PSAT score a few days ago. Also, my school requires PSATs to be taken from grades 9-11. I think it is on our transcripts. Can I get it omitted from my transcripts?

Thanks for the help.

For some odd reason, I thought that the application deadline was February 2 (Groundhog Day). I now see that February 9th must be the real deadline. Anyways, what exactly is meant by "application materials must be mailed from the school"? Is it just for security reasons? How is there a difference between sending it from your school or anyplace else?

the reason for that is because they want an official high school transcript, and transcripts are only official if the school sends them.

Don't be worried about this.

piccolojunior:

Would it be a good idea to put things such as AIME qualifier and AP Scholar With Honor even if I'm doing science research (not math)?

**YES!!! It can't hurt. Anything like that will help.

I'm self studying AP Chemistry and Environmental Science. Is there anything i should additionally submit to prove that I'm taking these AP exams and won't back out later?

**No. I did the self study track as well and just noted it on my rsi app. I don't think they need proof.

Finally, for the school transcript: I took some SATs in middle school:

**Yes, you can ask them to omit those scores; but it shouldn't matter because RSI will see that you took those tests in middle school. Send in your application asap. Good Luck :D

wait a minute - do the sat and sat II scores show up on the high school transcript? i thought collegeboard reported them directly to colleges?

I got my December SAT scores back, and they turned out way better than my PSAT scores, which was what I expected. Is it okay not to include PSAT scores and send in only SAT ones instead? Also do you think that sending in SAT II scores of 730 on Bio and 750 on Math II can harm my chances of getting in?

You can send in the SAT scores instead of the PSAT scores, but I would only do so if they were way way better. What were your scores?

Hm, they were definitely much better. PSATs I only managed a 216, and that's with a 73 in math. SATs, I got 780 in math and writing and 730 in critical reading. I'm not too happy about the critical reading score, I'm planning to retake it in June, but by then, it won't matter for RSI anymore... =) I don't really want to send in my low bio and math SAT II scores, but the problem is that they show up on the official score report copy, so I really have no choice. Any ideas of what I can do?

Oh, and I have one more question. Is it okay to put Medicine as a field? I've been browsing past threads, and most people seem to stick to the "common" ones - bio, chem, physics, math, etc. Thank you so much to everyone who's answered my questions. I really appreciate it! I'm fine-tuning my apps now, and I'm getting more nervous as the deadline approaches

congrats to intel finalists. rsi most def pwned.

Is it a bad idea to say that although you love math and science that you only recently thought about becoming a research scientist...or that youre not even sure?
b/c i'm debating that...its the truth though

hi i got a question. where can i find the fields and sub field research choices for the rsi app. is there a pool of set research fields, or can you just choose research fields in which you think are interesting. a friend of mine put genetics and thats not on the app, so im wondering if he got that choice of a list or something. Thanks.
