Include a copy of your score report.

What are some good alternatives to RSI?

and i'm from new york state if that helps

HSHSP at Michigan, the Clark Summer Program at Texas Tech, and Garcia's Polytechnic are programs I've heard good things about.

Also, a few questions for former RSI kiddos: I've just changed my SAT II date from December to January, so there's no way I'm going to get my scores in time to put them on the app. I know there's really no way to tell how much that will affect things, but did anyone get in without SAT IIs? Another thing - I'm reluctant to put my SAT score. It was above 2300, but my math was 730. My PSAT math score is above 75, though, so that's fine - but would the mediocre SAT math kill my chances?

Can anyone who has been accepted by RSI post his or her stats?

what is the Garcia's Polytechnic? I have heard a lot about it and I googled it, but I couldn't find anything useful online. Thanks!

chocaholic...do SUNY stonybrooke garcia lab

i haven't done it...but google it

they have tons of siemens, sts finalists and stuff

oh here's a link

silentsailor, you can include a note in your app that you'll fax/email/mail them scores from January as soon as they're available.

About the recs, I think vanilea is wrong. It is my opinion, and many of my RSI classmates agree, that the recs are the most important part. Scores are definitely not everything, a phenomenon already happening in college admissions and even more pronounced in RSI admissions, and it's possible to just work hard on the essays and do better than someone who doesn't work as hard. The two most important things, I think, are recommendations and experience. With that said, I don't think sending four recs will hurt you, as long as all four are good. For example, it is much better to have 3 really good ones than 3 really good ones and one mediocre one. Therefore, if you have 4 good ones to choose from, try to guess at which 2 or 3 will have the highest "average," so to speak. But you can also send four in and get in (I did).

btw anyone know how much like ACT scores will "make up" for psat scores? I have a feeling that I ****ed up on my psat, but i did pretty well on the ACT, so I'm hoping that it make up....o.O

anyone know if they'll let u send a rec letter from someone other than a high school teacher? i want to get one from a mentor of mine (who's technically a teacher since i guess mentor=teacher) instead of one of the teacher recs. but w/e i'll just e-mail them

Yeah I think the ACT thing works. A girl I know did that, only with the SAT. I think they just say PSAT because most juniors haven't taken the SAT yet. They just want some score I think.

Yeah you can use others. I used a professor from a math class I was taking. If you mean research mentor (advisor, or whatever), then definitely use him/her. They can talk about your experience and stuff, which is pretty important.

ok sick...

thanks

I know this is a really trivial question, but when they mention the three page limit on the essays, do they explicitly mean three pages double spaced? Would it be terribly rude to either single space or go slightly over the limit? (I'm already fretting about how to fit everything into one-two paragraph long "essays.") Also, if you attend both a regular high school and a half-a-day MSTC program should you put your regular high school or your Math/Science/Tech Center as your primary school?

I single spaced. Does it say to double space anywhere? That's not a lot of space...everyone I know single spaced. I wouldn't go over the page limit though, but I'm sure you could use small margins.

Which do you consider your primary school?

no way does it have to be double-spaced! haha, mine was single spaced, 10 pt font, ridiculously small margins (though i can't remember how small), two-column,etc. I heard they don't like applications over 3 pages, but, now that i think about it, mine was (I faxed an addendum after the deadline extension because i was mad :P)!

i got in and mine was 1.5 spaced,12font,1inch margins. i thought it a good compromise. but if you need more room for your essays use single spaced. they really dont care about formating except the 3 page limit. so in conclusion: whatever floats your boat.

oh and if anyone wants to know about other free or paid research programs to apply to here are some of the other ones i applyed to:

oh and i give my highest recommendation to the summer science program (ssp). i went to both rsi and ssp (ssp as a rising junior). given the choice to go to either one of them again i'd probably choose ssp.

so what exactly is ssp? i think i've read a little bit about it...something along finding the orbit of an asteroid? please expand

oh and to respond to silentsalor: i got in without satIIs and i wish i had an sat score of >2300. i actually had not even taken the sats either. go ahead and add it!

now this really is my last post for now. i bid thee all adu. adiew? adiou? adi-oo? adoo? adoiu?
