goooooo mitka!!!!!

wait, how come it doesnt say who won it on the site?

it's not on the site yet, but it has been released to the press. if you google dmitry vaintrob, you're find some articles about his win and project.

mitka = amazingness. i can't believe i used to think he was just some math kid with really scattered presentations. well that's rsi for you.

Mr. Crom yoooooooouuuuuuuuuuuu caaaaaaallllleddddd it....that's gangsta....hehe "woo the gangsta" B)

So have most people at RSI taken differential geometry and complex analysis like Mitka did?

No, just a few.

....Anyone at RSI last year, Please.... :D

...... what Major and subfields did you list on your app?

Were you all at the 220 on your PSAT? ( I believe the 75 on the
Math is a hard requirement but the other 2 are semi-hard requirements...)

YAY MITKA!!

who else won?

i believe most people were above 220, however there were probably a few below the level (over 50% had perfect scores on the math). i listed bioinformatics and bioengineerings, but it doesn't really matter what i listed or what anyone else did because it's suppose to be fields that are of interest to YOU! Good luck :D

Why do you call him mitka? Is that his Athena username? Where is he from? This is insane lol, I don't know if anyone from RSI has ever gotten 1st at Siemens. Good luck to him for STS.

that's a nickname...

for his project...it wasn't only what he did in rsi...he told me he did a lot of work after he got home as well

Yeahhhhh, congratulations to Mitka!!!!!!!!!! :) He needs to get a facebook, or a CC account, or smth. :)

I put physics as my major field and astrophysics as my subfield...

hmmm...would it really hurt me if i got slightly less than a 75 math on the PSATs but over a 220 overall? >_< grrrr i hate stupid mistakes!!!

^you already got your PSAT back? dang...i probably won't end up getting mine till like january....or just watch, they'll come in like in march...

yea NJers got them back on like 12/03 --we didn't get OURs until friday

YES it's okay to have a lower score on the math section (or any section) of the PSAT. It doesn't matter much, they just have to make sure you can do basic math okay and can read decently. I put applied math and biotechnology for my two fields, but I wrote 2 bio questions under applied math hehe.

So let me get this straight. For question two, I would put down two main fields and write about a subfield in each of those main fields. But for Part I of the app, I would only put down one main field and its corresponding subfield?

ie:

Part I: Physics/Astrophysics

Part II: Physics/Astrophysics; Arts & Crafts/Patchwork Mechanics
And I would continue to write about astrophysics and patchwork mechanics, right?

I only got a 193 on the PSAT. I really bombed writing. I only missed 2 Math multiple choice but that knocked me down to a 73.

Do I still have a shot at getting accepted to RSI?
I studied under a prof at Penn State this last summer but I wasn't doing research.

I don't want to get preoccupied with the RSI application process if instead I should be looking at a less selective research alternative.

If you need more background info:
I come from a small public high school (student body is about 1200.)
You can only take AP classes starting Jr. year so I'm taking 3 of them but the rest of my classes are honors.

I only do ec's if I know I can devote time to them. I am not one of those "join every club but do nothing" students.

I have a 3.95 avg unweighted and am ranked number 2 in my class of a little over 300. The person who is number one has never taken any AP's and is only in one honors class (but they skated through Fresh. and Soph. with a 4.0 in easy classes.)

I am only in PreCalc this year (this is following my schools advanced math progression which imo spends to much time (3 semesters) on Math A.

If you need anymore info about me to be determine if I have even the slightest chance of being accepted to RSI please dont hesitate to ask.

Hi everyone. I'm new here, and it's so exciting to see so many other people interested in RSI! I first heard about the program from my father's friend's daughter, who attended in '04, and she loved it, so I thought I'd apply too, since it seems like an extraordinary opportunity for more in-depth research than just working a university lab.

I was looking at the application today, and I was a bit confused about question 7. What dose it mean when it akss, "List below your technical skills level and academic background as of June 2007"? Does the technical skill thing mean like abilities you've picked up while researching such as staining, or doing PCR, etc? And for academic background, is it just classes you've taken? Or what grade you're in? I browsed the pages to the RSI 05 thread, and I couldn't find it, so it'd really help if someone could clear it up for me, thanks so much!
