Research Science Institute ( RSI ) 2008

GHANSEL!!!!

You forgot ping-pong and Bulgarian references ... those are always a plus!

Look, everyone! Rickoids love each other!

Ddpsc! ........

What?! It lower-cased my "dpsc".

Who's applying to ISSI, by the way? Everyone?

I just looked up ISSI to see what it is and it looks like it's only for teachers next summer. Too bad, it looked interesting.

Oh. One more thing for the hopefuls: I highly recommend forgetting about RSI until late March. Do something else, like win a science fair and get sick - it'll take your mind off of things.

I'm confused. I'd love to forget about RSI until March, but the deadline is in February.....

Pardon. Forget about RSI until late March - after you submit its application.

Does applying from a math and science magnet school give one a greater chance at admissions as opposed to applying from, say, a normal public high school?

A good number of participants of RSI 2007 came from science/math magnet schools, but equally as many came from normal public schools. The admissions board understands that not every applicant can receive the same educational opportunity, but what's important is how an applicant deals with his/her situation.

A lot of these factors (e.g. courses taken, activities, awards, etc.) are just minor details. I think CEE/RSI wants to know how these factors fit into the presentation of you as a person. Like ghansel said, they care most about how and what you think, and you can show this directly through application questions 1 and 2!

In regards to increasing chances, it helps if your name is David.

hey guys, a quick question.

I have pretty good ECs, and they reflect my passion for Science examples: my research over the summer is published, i did an intern in Computer Science, I'm the founder and president of Robotics Club, Editor in Cheif of Science Magazine.

However, i think my PSAT grades will be low (i'll know in about 2 weeks hopefully). So, taking into account that i have good grades ( ~96), rank (top 1%), AP classes, good Recc, and good ECs but my PSAT score are low (most likey in the 170 - 200). How will this combination be seen to the admissions of RSI and MITES? Do i have a fair shot?

Thanks

Have you taken the ACT?

Doing interns is impressive. RSI definitely likes people with low purity scores. Better for the eugenics, I think.

Nopes, no ACT, i plan to take the SAT in March and SAT I in June

I couldn't help perusing past RSI threads - they were up to page 80 and beyond by this time. Could it be we're apathetic or are we just more scientifically absorbed?

No, just not promiscuous enough. Enough for what, I'm not clear, but I'm also not clear why you're concerned with the length of the thread and it, thus, seems appropriate. Significantly more appropriate, however, than beginning sentences with that adverb.

Maybe it'll just be easier for us to get in? That'd be cool.

Okay. I was wondering if some of you guys could give me a picture of my chances. My stats are bellow but I'm concerned about two things. The first is that during my freshman year I was stupid and took the SAT and got a low score (<2000)... but that was 2 years ago. PSAT scores have not come out yet, but I am pretty sure my score will be well above 220.

Stats:
Weighted GPA : 4.524 (Unweighted = 4.000)
Class Rank : 1/600+
Classes Taken (10th): AP Chemistry, AP Calculus, AP US History, AP Economics, Human anatomy, and AP Spanish Language.
Classes Enrolled (11th): AP Biology, AP Physics, AP Calculus BC, AP Language, AP Spanish Literature, Science Research and Health Careers
Honors: In my frosh/soph year I have a total of 10 classes taken with honors, not including the AP's that I took.
SAT/ACT : NA
PSAT: NA

Extracurriculars:
Debate : President of Speech/Debate club. Quarterfinalist at Nationals as a freshman. State titles in policy debate and extemp as a sophmore.
Varsity Water Polo and Varsity Swimming all three years of high school. 2 state championship titles in 3 years for water polo and the 2 so far in swimming (going on now)
NHS : I lead my chapter of the National Honor Society in volunteer hours.
Key club, MUN on the side. no big stuff there though.
Piano/Alto Saxophone: Emphasis on Jazz Music. Composed pieces

Science Research Stuff
1.ISEF this year. Environmental Engineering project (solid).
2. Working during the school year at Intel as a Systems Engineer (Fluent in C++ and Matlab)
3. Working in cardio-bioengineering research with a mentor. Do biomedical signal processing work with C++ and hands on experience with medical stuff.
4. volunteer at hospital for about 30hrs so far this year.

I can write a pretty good essay i think. Can some of you guys give me a picture of my chances?

You'll surely make it past the preliminary screening. And a lot of APs can't hurt anyone. Generally a score between 215 to 240 will cut it. Definitely talk about that research stuff though. In fact, drop me a PM. I'd like to hear more about that.

Hmm well the water polo will definitely help. All of that rumbling and tumbling = major plus for eugenics. The human anatomy should help too, for the same reasons. RSI is always a crapshoot, but you clearly have things to offer.
