Research Science Institute (RSI) 2009

i think calibri looks nice, better than times new romans, I cant stand times new romans anymore

if your transcript lists the sat and psat scores is that evidence enough? or do they actually want me to send the score result page or to photocopy that page?

^Yea! I thought I was the only one..but yea its soooo annoying!! I hate Calibri, and some how Word uses it automatically...

Ha ha, i just wanted to point out that we're insanely ahead of the TASP posts.
summer programs having to do with english/history suck. :) ....for ppl who can't handle science!

IF you attach a research paper should you include a cover letter or just mention that the paper is attached in #3?

I wouldn't attach a research paper, I have spoken with MIT alumni and one of their bits of advice is to keep the app concise and straight to the point. If they don't ask or state that you CAN do something, don't. They might think you are trying to pad the app.

What all are you guys including in your application folder?
I have:
The application itself
My essays (3 pages)
2 teacher recommendations
Transcript from school
Transcript from college
PSAT score report
SAT2 score report
Check fo fitty dollars

Anything I'm missing?

^ya thats what i have (except the college transciprt)

If have never taken a SAT I, SAT II, or ACT test, you just skip number 8?

Who first reads the applications? Do they hire mit students?

For people wondering about verification about standardized test scores, here's what Cliff Bowman (RSI director) had to say when I emailed him:

We had hoped that students would be sending us their scores through the
ETS’s reporting service, but our application for a code is still being
processed. It probably won’t be ready for this year’s applications, so that
leaves two ways to help us verify your scores. The first is to ask your
school if they print the scores on your official transcript. If they do
(about half of the schools we work with do), you don’t need to do anything:
the transcript is the verification we’ll use. If they don’t, please
photocopy the score report that ETS sent you in the mail and include it with
your application. Make sure the entire page is legible, including your ID
code in the upper right hand corner. We don’t need the back of the report
form, and you can reduce the form and print in black and white.

So, photocopy or trust your transcript.

wait...but what about psat scores

my 2007 scores are on the transcript, but they dont put 2008 scores on until late march (dont know why)...

anyways, when i try to photocopy it, it does not fit the entire score report on it (its the one that the school gave me, not through the mail)..so i cant fit everything on there...is that going to be a problem (the three scores and my name are on there, but i cant fit my code on there)

Is it going to be a major problem if I havent taken any SAT I or SAT II tests???

Because my number 8 is completely blank...

ALso, ive only taking a few AP tests,...am i screwed because of this?

No, they will evaluate you only based on your PSAT scores for one since everyone has to submit them; as for SAT scores they can use them if your application/chances would be benefited from the usage.

By standardized scores, do they just mean PSAT or SAT I/II/APs as well?

Is it okay to attach a resume?

And I think they mean PSAT and SATs that they want verification for, not AP tests.

Hi,

this is my absolute first post on college confidential. if i list my credentials, i hope someone will tell me what my chances are. thanks!

SAT: 2400
SAT II: Bio E - 800, Math IIC - 800
PSAT: Not reporting to RSI
GPA Unweighted: 4.0
APs: 5s on Euro, BC, Stat, and Bio
Science Credentials: 2 research internships which yielded awards: 2nd place ISEF, Siemens Semi, lots of 1st place awards at local fairs and some special awards from ISEF. Math-local awards
ECs: President of Debate, National awards in debate, Captain of Chess team; regional awards in chess/national ranking in top 100 girls u16 last year, Several community positions/service appointments

3 rec letters: 2 research advisors and a math teacher (all very strong)
Essays are decent; not brilliant though.

Please let me know what you guys think; Thank-you very much again.

^Ummm wait..what?? ISEF and Siemens and research internships and national awards? I hope youre joking..

and people are wondering why they dont have a chance...

why do you need to know what your chances are? I would say 100%...

i doubt you need to show "passion" in your essays because your accomplishments stand for themselves...

btw i dont want to sound harsh, im actually being serious, i really think 100%
btw what state are you from?

anyways, so i just mailed it out..just want to make sure i have everything

Part I application
Part II application (3 page essay)

Verification of scores

Thats all right?

I hope they try to verify all the other "national awards" becasue I do not want some person lying about some big award (the names should be on the internet for each of those competitions like olympiads and big research ones)...
i just have this feeling that someone else in my school that is applying is going to lie about their research experience (because he always lies about everything and he bragged to everybody that no one could catch him if he did)...which really would suck since its pretty hard to verify it...

Yeah, ra most juniors haven't even taken the SAT yet/SAT II's yet. If you don't make it, nobody will. Consider yourself in

Oh man that would suck. But they probably should check to make sure if they're selecting so few people...

and ra2010, that's basically what a friend of mine had (without the perfect GPA and SATs) and she made it.
