So in previous years people have been encouraged to send their Research Papers to MIT but this year they only want abstracts? Is that correct - are any of you guys sending in research papers.

Searching online, the only schools that seem to want entire papers are Harvard (Hard Copy) and Caltech (PDF). Do schools which dont specify still usually want abstracts?

I sent in the abstract and a recommendation letter from my research mentor to all the schools I applied to. I doubt they’d need to actually read the entire paper.

I’ve read that MIT prefers either the abstract or a description of your research and how it has affected your career path, what you learned, etc, but I’m not sure if you should mail in that separately or include it as the optional essay.

I’m submitting an essay putting the research in context in addition to a formal abstract and a layperson’s summary. I think that they ask for you to place that stuff into the optinal section of part 2.
