Thats really cool how you got your quote box to scroll.
Students should also consider states that offer 150% of instate tuition to regional residents.

Yes, how did you get that box to scroll? lol

:)

this really is a nice list for students who want a low cost alternative to their own instate schools AND for int’ls who want low cost schools.

Last year D2 was admitted to UMinn-TC with great merit aid, it came out costing less than our IS flagship with their top scholarship. There are some great opportunities listed.

I also have scroll-envy.

Edit: used my Mod powers to see Bob’s text, he used [ code ] [ /code ] w/o spaces.

I used the “code” tag because it uses fixed font so that the columns can stay aligned. The scroll bar is an unintentional consequence. :-)

Thanks for all of your contributions Bob!

Posted my thanks on the similar table for liberal arts colleges in another thread. BobWallace, you rock!

I hope more pay attention to the information you’ve tabulated early on in the process so they can ensure that the application list is balanced to reflect the possibility of attendance not just admission!

I’ve recommended Cleveland State to kids and always got the nose in the air. Yet I know a number of grads from that school that have and are doing so well. Did not really think about pulling out these schools by research activity, which I think is a great qualifier.

The other thing about some of these schools, is that when looks at the COA, they can be deceptive in that some of them have great cheap housing options that many if not most students take advantage of after freshman year, and the set living expenses that the universities charge for their plans can easily be beat. I can personally attest to SUNY BUffalo. They charge a lot for their very nice on campus apartments and their very flexible meal plans, but if you get a cheap South Campus flat and cook your own or eat in the dives in that area, you can beat those costs. A lot of international students live very, very cheaply in that they share rooms and cook their own food, and at Buffalo, I’ve seen the all of the students doing the same, not just the international ones. You are talking some nice sized cities with some of these schools.

Also there are community colleges that have housing or will help with housing that have very low cost tuitions even for out of staters and generous terms for switching to instate. The deals are out there.

It’s interesting to me that the OH state schools are very price competitive with the SUNYs which have long been considered relative bargains for OOS students.

Bob, that is awesome. Now in all your free time, could you figure out which of these schools also offer scholarships to out of state students? :)

Erin’s dad, the SUNYs jacked up OOS tuition just a few years ago, a very stupid move IMO, since it did more harm than good, given the very few OOS kids they get. Until then, they were great deals that just were not taken up by many.

Scubasue, all of the Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, and Alabama schools in the list offer substantial merit scholarships. Some of the thresholds are quite low too, for example Louisiana Tech and Louisiana-Lafayette waive OOS tuition for 1050 SAT + 2.5 GPA.

Thanks for the info CPT. I found a site that showed the big jumps in 2004 and 2010. I’m not sure the cost boost did more harm than good given they are still a relative bargain.

Bumping this thread since it was brought up in the other one about public LACs.

Wow…those South Dakota schools’ prices are amazing for OOS.

Yes, the South Dakota schools’ out-of-state tuition is low enough that the WUE discount is irrelevant – the WUE tuition rate of 1.5 times the in-state rate is higher than the South Dakota schools’ normal out-of-state tuition rate.

Here is South Dakota State’s cost of attendance, although one should use caution to note that it does not include any miscellaneous, personal, or travel costs commonly listed on other schools’ costs of attendance.

The South Dakota state universities are not that selective either, but what may trip some frosh applicants up is the art course requirement among one’s high school courses (this seems to come up frequently for out-of-state applicants to state universities in California as well).

There are some states (such as North and South Dakota) that were losing large numbers of young people. They kept their OOS tuition low to try to attract students who would hopefully stay after graduation. N. Dakota is wallowing in new money from their oil boom, some of which they are putting into their public universities. However, in any area near the oil boom areas, housing prices have become outrageous. One person said “North Dakota is the one place where you can make a 6 figure income and still be stuck living in your truck.”
