Research vs Internship?

I'm a rising junior and I would like to major in finance. I believe that I have the potential to attend UPenn-Wharton or NYU Stern, or similar schools. However, I was told that admissions officers like to see research on a resume.

For the summer, I have been accepted into an internship program in finance and also have a mentor on the line to write a research paper with over the summer. Which one would be better for me?

Just to add- i have done two internships but both were government work and not in my field of interest. Thanks for your help!!

Honestly do what you would think you would like more; they’ll both suit you fine if you’re worried about college admissions.

What do you plan to do in finance? Something like investment banking?

Yeah i was thinking more corporate finance though

I would say internship just because it is related to what you want to do.

You were misinformed. Few HS students have research experience. Its a plus, but adcoms also know that few HS students have the background to do any meaningful work; consequently impressive-sounding results are usually the result of being led by the hand. It shows you worked with a capable advisor or grad student, but that isn’t who is applying for college admission.

Assuming that the intern position is one in which you will work day-to-day with finance professionals it’s likely to be the more productive way to spend the summer. I agree with mikemac on the merits of doing research at this early stage in your career.
