I'm a rising junior, and I am planning on doing research next summer (the summer after my junior year). I would like to attend a college that will prepare me well for medical school, such as Duke, Wash. U. in St. Louis, Johns Hopkins, UPenn, Rice, or Baylor. Therefore, it would be appropriate for me to do research in fields of biology, chemistry, etc.

I hear the word "research" over and over again in these forums, but I'm not quite sure how you actually go about starting research. Where/how exactly do I start? Whom do I talk to? Do I just go to a college and tell them I'd like to do research?

In other words, how does one start the whole research process?

Yes, you basically contact professors who perform research that interests you. You may also want to check if the colleges you'd like to work at (or other research centers and institutions) have research programs for high school students.

there are alot of threads with a similar focus on this forum. i suggest you search for them because most people may look here and immediately go back. after a while, they get bored of answering the same questions. i'm just telling you that you shouldn't expect a wide variety of responses. i for one have not done research yet, though i want to get involved soon. i just look up research threads and get some ideas there.

I'm not very familiar with the process myself, but I'm sure fizix can help. (Sorry, fizix.)
