Research

I hear alot of people talking about how they did research over the summer and published there findings. How exactly does that work? Also what type of research did u do?

I’ve never done any research or anything but I know many people do partake in such endeavors at a college over the summer.

Firstly, I wouldn’t say “a lot”–but there’s certainly going to be more of those types on CC.

How to get a research job:

 1. Had you asked this question several months earlier, there would be a plethora of summer research internships to check out. As it were, most of them are closed, but check around your area–some might still be taking applications, but no guarantees.

2) Since there probably aren’t any programs still open, find some local universities. Most, if not all, will have pages for their faculty/departments/schools/whatever. Under pretty much every professor’s profile will be a brief description of their research and research interests as well as contact info (a phone number or institutional email). Consider doing the same for hospitals, thinktanks, and etc. Apparently the military also has a surplus of research money/positions, but I’ve never applied, so I wouldn’t know. In any event, pick a couple of people who do research in an area in which you’re interested and drop them a line saying, “Hey, your work looks really cool, do you mind taking on a high school student?” Some will say “eh,” some will say, “nah,” but hopefully one says, “sure, I have room in my lab.”

A little about me–I did a six-week program at my local Ivy League Uni’s Med School (we even got stipends!) doing environmental science research. I’ve so far gotten two acceptances to professional conferences, with more hopefully pending. Publication in a scientific journal is my next goal, don’t know when that’s going to happen.

Good luck!

Well, for one, I will be “researching” computer vision and object recognition and ect during summer. Perhaps a reflex test or game using camera to track your iris. Or perhaps just object recognition. I won’t bother any professors or anything like that. Chances are I will be their lab boy doing all the tedious tasks. I would not call THAT research. I know what I will do isn’t exactly “research”, well it is research for me because I have yet to do it before. Hell, it is more of a research than interning for some professor. And, no, I won’t be doing any papers or abstracts or anything. At the end of my sophomore year, I did “3D Image Generation From An IR Rangefinder”. I wasn’t exactly done, I ran out of time, I might go back and finish that up.

Wait who would want a high school student to “research” something when there are bunches of college students who are more qualified and could better use the stipend money?

Exactly, that is why I don’t even bother asking… and why I am doing it alone.

^^Well, of course a bunch of research institutions are willing to have high school research interns. Personally, I did research at the USDA after my sophomore year and will do a summer research internship (medically-oriented) at Stanford this summer. If you’re after doing some research, internships would be great. Unfortunately, you’ve probably missed most of the deadlines for this summer.

Can I please have some more info on the USDA internship…? A link would be great :D
