Hi, I read the other research thread below this one, and I still had some questions so I started this one.

First of all, I'm trying to get research but I don't know where to start and I'm a freshman right now.

I'm confused by all the different research projects that I see on different researcher's websites.

Since I'm only in undergrad, do I only go after the basic science research? Or is it even possible to get medically related research such as pathology, cardiology or even psychology when working under someone??

How did you guys get your first research positions? Did you e-mail professors directly? Which kind of professors would you recommend (as in subject areas)? Through special programs?

Thanks.

Go talk to a professor that you like that its in an area that your interested in. I really get along with my neuroscience prof and I told him that I would be interested in working in his lab at some point and I'm going to be in the lab next summer now.

I did the same thing dk did. I just emailed as many professors as possible and was surprised at the amount of responses I received. I really think at this point, just "getting your feet wet" is the best approach to finding a research position. It will be extremely difficult to get into any meaningful research if you very little research experience.

1.) Don't forget your school's alumni network. Look up prominent alums from across the country.

2.) Be geographically flexible about your summers. Plenty of premeds want to spend their summers at home. I'm the only one I've ever met who managed to do so without making compromises, and that was through point #1 above. Many premeds stay at their schools over the summer; many go to other schools.
