Research?

Many of those who get accepted into good science/math schools such as UPenn, Duke, or Johns Hopkins have some sort of research done (usually over a summer).

How exactly does one go about getting started with official research? Where do you go to get a research program set up? Do you just walk up to a local college and tell them you are interested in research for the summer?

Those of you who have done research over a summer: will you please explain how exactly you get started?

many schools offer research programs to high school students

other than that, you can contact a researcher at a nearby school who is doing research you like, and ask him / her if you can help somehow

Well, if you end up like me I applied for research programs but was rejected. But you don't have to go through a program i have done science research of a very high caliber all on my own every summer. So just google something you are interested in and concieve of a project and then do it, I mean perhaps it may be even more impressive if you do a project on your own than through a program. Good Luck!

yeah just contact a professor at a local university!
chances are, you'll have to contact more than one...i was "rejected" about 10 times before finally some crazy scientist decided to give a dork like me access to his lab. but it was very well worth it, the experience was amazing
