I know I a lot of people do "research" but how do you do that? Do you go to a local university and ask? I was interested in doing some research on a certain topic (though not for a college resume). Anyone know how to?

Please help.

I really need to do research this summer, or at least something. Does anyone know how?

We need more information about you. Are you in high school or in college? What fields interest you?

Google is your friend.

I’m in highschool, and sorry for over bumping. The field is medicine related. I don’t want to go to some summer camp or something, just like be able to research this one topic (that I don’t want to discuss) in order to help someone dear to me.

its going to be hard finding research without already made connections during highschool

If you’re planning on attending Michigan (I’m assuming you are or something, since this is the Michigan board) I highly recommend you check out the UROP program. It’s not perfect, but it is a great way to get introduced to a number of early research opportunities around campus.

Also, it’s never hard to start emailing professors, doctors, etc. who are doing research in fields that you’re interested in. They are much more receptive than people would think and another great resource for research opportunities.

This can be accomplished at the high school level, also. A lot of universities do offer high school students chances to get involved in research - it basically depends on the level of tenacity you have in pursuing it. I know the National Institute of Health (NIH) has begun accepting applications for their research programs, so I’d also encourage you check that out.

A lot of the “research” you’re going to do is probably scrub *, where you’re basically the of the lab, but it will give you valuable insight into the workings of a research environment. Plus, if you prove yourself reliable, you’ll probably get more responsibility as time goes on and potential people to tap for letters of rec in the future.

Finally, if the topic is to help someone dear to you, express that in an email query you would send to a researcher in the field that you want to become involved in.

Best of luck!

Can you elaborate on this? What do you mean by “help someone dear to me”?
