I just got a flier in the mail yesterday from the ucsd's textbook reservation service. i was actually planning on buying used books from a different site to save money...but should i reserve books just in case? Do most students buy their books from the ucsd book store?

Buy from another site/bookstore, you will save hundreds of dollars. UCSD bookstore is overpriced for ALL people.

In response to your last question… no. Really the only people that use the textbook reservation service are freshmen. But yeah UCSD bookstore is ridiculously overpriced. Not trying to sound like an ad here but I go to half. com and save hundreds every quarter, it has worked out very well for me.

does anyone know if the library carries sets of the books that you can checkout for a few hours at a time?

^Yes. The library carries the textbooks for most classes and they’re called “reserves”. You can’t check them out but you can use them within the library for a limited period of time (I think the limit is a few hours).

ETA: http://libraries.ucsd.edu/resources/course-reserves/course-reserves-faq.html

You don’t have to buy from them even if you signed up for it right? It says you’re charged after Aug. 26th. Do I need to cancel my reservation if I don’t want it?

Yeah I would call the bookstore and cancel it.

Buy from another site. My friend got a 180 dollar O Chem book for 15 bucks online.

Alternate solution, rent it!

There were some earlier suggestions on another thread about using Facebook Marketplace to buy books. You meet with the seller and get the text without shipping delays and charges and probably at lower cost. But I’m thinking this might not work for freshmen as we are not getting there until Sept. 19, or so. Any suggestions about how to buy books direct from other UCSD students?

^I know people who have used facebook marketplace and it seems to be efficient and cheap. You get there on September 19th, and classes don’t start until the 24th, so that gives you plenty of time to meet up with the seller. And that’s IF you decide to do your readings on the first day of class haha.

thanks for the feedback everyone. I was wondering about this same question too :).

Oh yeah, just in case you’re new to college, look for used soft cover international editions online. They’re usually the same and are WAY cheaper than the hardcover US editions.

yeah, they usually have these at half . com too…i use half for most my books, i always save so much and you can choose from different levels of used/new
