Residence Hall Housing

Is it recommended to live on campus your first year, even if you're local? Is it safe to assume that most first year students stay in the resident hall -vs- apartments? Should I select single, double, or triple? Any another helpful tips? Thanks!

By all means, live on campus your first year, even if you’re local, unless it’s too expensive for you. My friend lived on campus her first year, then moved back home after her second so she could establish friendships and whatnot. I have another friend that commuted her first year, and she had a pretty hard time making friends because in all honesty, living with people, interacting with people on your floor–that’s how you make the bulk of your friends, unless you join a frat/sorority or get extremely involved in a club.

There’s always other ways to make friends if you do live off at home & commute, such as joining your college’s commuter club (they coordinate outings, usually have a space in the college for you to just hang out, have friday breakfasts, etc) and you could join other clubs, frats, sororities, whatever you’re interested in!

If you’re going to live on campus, I’d suggest not living in a single for your first year. You should really have the experience of living with someone else, assuming you may only live on campus for one year. A triple may be a possibility if money is an issue, but otherwise, I’d say go with a double.
