Residence Hall Question

We have heard so many times the importance of applying ASAP for housing in order to get a good priority number.

Those of you out there who have already been through the process and applied for housing immediately after being accepted. Did you get your 1st, 2nd, or 3rd choice for housing?

I am wondering if it is even possible to get your first choice. For instance, if you are admitted to the Honors Program and choose Landis (403 capacity) as your top dorm choice what are your chances of getting in that dorm? According to an honors rep that I spoke with, FSU will have approx 600 new Freshmen in the honors program fall 2008 (10% of freshmen class). Logically, some students that are presently in the program and wish to continue living in Landis will make the number of rooms available quite a bit less.

I would love to hear some feedback conerning this. Thanks.

Being the nice Dad I am, and having also read all the comments about getting your priority number ASAP, I let my son sleep and stayed up and waited for the housing and admissions sites to get updated. The admissions site was offline a while which I assumed meant it was being updated with the list of accepted students. While waiting I tried the housing site, entered his info, and it came back saying he had been accepted and allowed me to register. He ended up with a priority number in the low 20's. He had no problem getting into Landis with that number !

That is great to hear. I had planned to do exactly what you described. I'm glad to hear that your efforts made it possible for your son to get into Landis!
How does he like living in the Honors Dorm?

what time were you able to do this? right after midnight or in the early am of decision day?

thanks

guys calm down, aslong as you apply for the right dorms you should get your first choice. All of those who applied for degraff and wildwood got that as there dorm, i had a friend with a 5000 priority number who got a room in degraff bldg 2, so its not that big of a problem, the reason i said apply for the right dorms is that alot of people apply to broward, bryan, gilchrist cawthon which are the smaller dorms and also have living and learning communities in them which limits them to not having alot of space, and thats when people get placed in temp housing over at smith or kellum.

He's really happy at Landis and it was around 1:00 am if I remember correctly that the housing site allowed registration.

thanks for the reply. how does your son like fsu thus far? when you signup for housing, do you select dorm priority or just get a priority number and choose dorms later in the process?

nycollegedad,
He's very happy both at FSU and with Landis Hall living. At the time you signup for housing you need to select the dorms (1st through 3rd choice I believe) you want. If your child is applying for Honors, you'll need to have the two Honors dorms as their first two choices and one of the other dorms as choice 3 in case they aren't accepted to the Honors program.

Can I have confirmation that we need to select our first three dorm choices when applying for our priority numbers?
Cause if that's true I need to squeeze in another visit to FSU before Nov 28th, to get another look at the residence halls, and correct my college counselor.

they make you list your top 4 dorm choices.

just to help those who need help.my favorites are.
wildwood
degraff
cawthon
reynolds
gilchrist
bryan
broward

When my son applied for housing you also had to indicate whether roommate choice or dorm choice was more important to you.

Some dorms say designated for... like wildwood (Designated spaces reserved for members of the Social Justice Learning Community and the Nursing Learning Community)... does that mean that you have to be a part of that comm. to live in the residence?? I don't get that. Also degraff says that and some others???

I would not take this for granted, despite whatever quirks allowed a high number into a desirable dorm. Get your best priority number possible. It's a simple thing to do and only takes a few minutes.

This is kind of like applying early. The ability to realize benefits are maximized when you put yourself into the best position. ;)

what about summer housing? do you select that at the same time you get your priority number? do you fill out two requests, one for summer and one for fall?

what are the best dorms for summer?

Summer housing will most likely be different from Fall. The student will probably have to move from one dorm to another.

Two requests would be required; but only one priority number.

Ragans was open for all last summer, but for a freshman a more social dorm would likely be more enjoyable than Ragans. I'd suggest Gilchrist, Reynolds or any of the renovated east-side (old campus) dorms if they are open during Summer.

By the way - despite my kids both being in the top 5% of freshman admits I still worried about admission at FSU until they were "in" and with a decent priority number in hand. ;) Stuff happens...best to get it right the first time!

Guess this goes along with being a parent.

Summer Housing Information

Students who have been admitted for the summer session will need to complete two separate housing agreements.

1) Fall/Spring Housing Agreement: University Housing begins accepting Fall/Spring Housing Agreements for the following year PRIOR to accepting agreements for the upcoming summer session. Do NOT wait for the Summer Agreement to be available before completing the one for Fall/Spring as this will result in a later placement in line for this term.

Note: There is no correlation between the assignment you receive for summer session and the one you receive for Fall/Spring.
2) Summer Housing Agreement: The online agreement for Summer 2008 will become available on February 8th , 2008. A non-refundable advance payment of $100 must be received in our office within 10 days of submission of the summer housing agreement to avoid automatic cancellation.

to the person who asked about the living communities, the dorms which say they reserve spots for those communities means that, those in the community have both priority to a dorm and are almost required to live in that dorm, for instance in the degraff community we have 40 people meaning that already have those 40 spots out of 700 taken. While dorms like bryan, broward, and cawthon have all spots taken by living community residents...it pays to be in an llc.

sounds like gilchrest or reynolds are good selections for the summer.

i think fsu-uf said he stayed in one of these and liked it... in some ways more than degraff

yea i stayed in gilchrist and really liked it since i was really close to classes and suwannee, plus the interior was almost equal to degraff, reynolds is also a favorite of many
