Residence Hall Suggestions

I'm getting ready to complete my housing application for Fall 2009. I will pick a residential college for my first choice, but does anyone have any suggestions what to pick for my second and third choices (I understand it can't be another residential college)? Thanks

What you really want to do is be in a good location. Try to stay on the east side of campus so you are close to the new dining hall, Commons 459. Along with the union, rec center, and close to most classes.

What residential college did you request? If it's Honor's then I would put Acadian as 2nd because it is half honor's students and it is nice. If you're a girl then Evangeline is another to try. Just stay away from Herget if you can.

There is a new residential college for agriculture students (also includes fashion design, etc..) called Blake Hall. Brand new renovation and it is very nice. They don't show it listed as a choice but if you can get there then you're set.

Good Luck and Geaux Tigers!

Thanks for the reply collegenut. I put the business residential college as my first choice - I was hesitant to put it because of the location like you are suggesting. I didn't know about Acadian. I put as my other choices McVoy and Annie Boyd - I'm a male. Hope there's nothing wrong w/those choices! What's wrong w/Herget? - someone else told me not to request that one.

Herget is the Fr. residential college and although the location is good (on the lake too) the rooms are very small and it's jwas not very nice. (162 sq. ft.)
However, they've just finished a $1.8 million renovation with newly painted rooms, new movable and loftable bed frames, new movable student desks, new ceiling light fixtures & new ceiling tiles. I haven't seen it yet but it must be improved. Still small rooms though. Herget is good for kids who are undecided about what they want to study as there are RAs and others who arrange things for the freshmen in Herget to help them be successful at LSU.
They help you adjust from high school to college life.

McVoy and Boyd are okay but I'd switch Acadian to your second choice. My son lived in E. Laville (Honors) this past year and his room was 220 sq.ft. by comparison. He will be in ECA this year.

You are doing this early enough that you'll probably get your 1st choice without any problem. Residential Life really does all they can to make everyone happy. Congrats to you for starting the summer before Senior Year to make plans. I wish more kids knew to do this as it really is crucial. Next year you'll be counting down until the day you can request your student football tickets! :)

Try this: the next time you visit campus please walk that walk from the (Business Res. College) across to the union, rec center, dining, etc..
It is nice that they promote classes in the dorm (few) and it is new (opened Jan.'08) but all the kids I've talked to say they'd live in their crappy older dorm again versus the Bus. or Eng. Res college due to LOCATION. It's a tough call though and it's what you feel suits you best.

Another thing about the West side of campus (by the PMac and tennis courts where Graham is) is that is known as not the safest location. It's very close to the boundary of campus and not a great neighborhood. This might not be something you're thinking about now but it is something to consider.

I have friends starting in business this fall who elected to stay in Acadian or Miller instead of the Bus. RC due to some of these things. It's tough to pass on a private room and brand new res hall though.

If I had a halfway interest in science I'd try to get in the new BIOShere
Freshmen Interest Group (FIG), which has space for approx. 100 students majoring in the Basic Sciences in newly renovated Blake Hall. It looks awesome and the science side of the dorm has suite style baths whereas the agriculture side has hall baths. This dorm is right in the same parking lot as 459 Commons. Great location.

Best of luck to you and just post if you have other questions about LSU!

Where do you go to high school?

One other thing....Annie Boyd is an upperclassman dorm so you can't request it as one of your three choices.

Another tip---definitely sign up for STRIPES which is a blast. It is a great way to meet other freshmen and learn all about LSU. Orientation is obviously important but STRIPES is FUN! It takes place in Aug. before classes begin.
check it out...

Thanks for your suggestions collegenut. I'll have to think about this. As for Annie Boyd, the housing dept said freshmen and upperclassmen are in there - I had read something too that it was just for upperclassmen - I think it was on their website - but they assured me there were freshmen in there. I have a friend that requested Highland - do you know anything about that dorm?

I'm in TX and will also be applying to some TX colleges.

Is STRIPES some kind of orientation?

hey i just got into blake hall but not the residential part. do u have to be majoring in sciences to live there? because i thought it could be used as a traditional dorm…

wamp- you don’t have to be an ag major. i got into blake hall, and i am not an ag major at all. i’m pretty far from it. however, there was extra room.

berkmanfan- stripes is like a fun-filled orientation. it’s not when you sign up for classes,
but it’s just kind of like an intro to lsu the fun way.

Everybody I know that did STRIPES loved it. Some people who don’t do it their freshman year go back and do it later before their sophomore or junior years.

**** LSU housing…
