Residence Halls vs Suites vs Apartments

I’m an international senior student from the UK and i’ve recently been admitted to USC and i’m looking at Housing Options however i’m struggling on the pros and cons of each style of housing.

With halls i’m struggling with the idea of how much privacy I will have being in close quarters with a roommate being in a room with them and also sharing communal showers and toilets.

With suites and apartments i’m struggling with the idea of being unsociable.
Please can someone educate me on the pros and cons of each style of housing.

My daughter, now a sophomore at USC, toured them all and really wanted to live in Webb or Fluor as a freshman for many reasons… first - its an apartment or suite set-up and simply has more space - with living room and kitchen, private bath, and A/C throughout the apartment (in the case of Webb). My key advice though is to do what she did… locate a roommate and then make sure that your preferences/requests match exactly… #1 thru 4 or 5, however many there are. By doing this, you make the job of USC Housing easier and they are more like to pair you two together and grant you one of your top choices. She found her roommate here on CC. My daughter is now at Century as a sophomore and has already locked in Century again for her junior year. Everyone has different needs or wants. In her case, it was A/C throughout (which is rare at USC) and having an actual apartment with lots of space + a kitchen + private bath. With Webb and Century, all of her needs were met. I urged her to pursue such because my dorm rm experience in college was very annoying. Small dorm rooms with no living space + no kitchen + community bath gets old very quickly & does not make up for the social aspects of dorms overall. You can always live comfortably and party or socialize elsewhere Good luck…

Or… if you get to choose directly and care about A/C for example…

The USC apartments that have central air-conditioning are: Century, Troy Hall, Severance Street, and the first floor in Annenberg. Buildings with AC in the living room only are: Cardinal Gardens, Troy East, Regal Trojan, Pacific, Vista, Manor, La Sorbonne, Max Kade House, Stardust, Cardinal ‘N’ Gold, and the 2nd and 3rd Floors in Annenberg.

So are there any apartments that are more geared to transfer students? S2 received his USC transfer acceptance (TTP) this past Friday, and immediately requested his top five choices for housing (La Sorbenne, Stardust, Severance, Manor, & Max Kade) from afar in Dallas, TX without actually seeing these apartments. He really prefers having a private room, being a studio or single, and that is why he chose those five apartments. Can anyone provide any information that might be helpful from the transfer student perspective as well as rating his top five choices?

@shorty90604 My primary insight only relates to A/C… which was critical to my D’s decision-making process. At USC… the apartments that have central air are: Century, Troy Hall, Severance Street, and the first floor in Annenberg. Hope that helps…

@WWWard Thank you for the information. I have been looking at the housing site for some time now and drove by the five apartments S2 selected before the USC FB Spring game this past Saturday. Looking at them online and such just leaves me feeling like I need more details.

I understand that transfer students are not placed in apartments until mid-June, so I am wondering if anyone knows about the chances that none of my S2’s five USC apartment selections will be available and he will be out needing to find a place to live. I have talked to several apartment leasing companies in the area (not the five S2 selected), and it sounds like the percentage of apartments they have left for the Fall is decreasing pretty quickly. Does anyone have any experience, insight, or suggestions to share? Thank you!

S2’s five USC apartment selections (in no particular order) - La Sorbonne, Severance, Manor, Stardust, and Max Kade. He requested to be in a studio or single room.

@shorty90604 You’re welcome. Hopefully someone can weigh-in regarding the availability of apartments or the likelihood of such during the transfer student placement process. Good luck…
