Residence Halls

I've recently been accepted to UW, and have been considering which hall I want to live in. These are my top 3: Hansee, McMahon, and either McCarty or Haggett. I know that this has probably been covered in other threads, but which hall is the best? What are their faults? The best things about them?

Good idea to make this thread

I don’t really know much about UW dorms, other than they apparently look like jail cells without anything in them. Anyone know which are the sociable ones?

I’ve heard Mercer is terrible…

Most freshmen get placed into Terry or Lander and these tend to be the most social dorms for freshmen.

I’ve heard McMahon is pretty good.

I haven’t checked into housing much but I want to major in engineering so I imagine that I want to dorm with fellow nerds and minor in Japanese so I would like to dorm with an international Japanese student. Does anyone know how I would go about doing so?

Alot of international student’s choose Steven’s Court apartments as that’s the only dorm you can stay in between quarters

(I live in steven’s court and like it)

ps. there is also the BRAND NEW poplar hall. no one call tell you what it’s like since it won’t open until the fall
[UW Housing and Food Services > Housing Options](<a href=“Housing & Food Services - UW HFS”>Housing & Food Services - UW HFS)

How long are the periods between quarters? I won’t be able to come home between them so how do students typically deal with that. Are the Steven’s Court apartments dorms or apartments? Do they have engineers there or would I have to choose between my two passions?

Lander is a freshmen-only dorm and is the best place for freshmen to make new friends and socialize.

Lander will probably be high on my list then. Are any of them uncontrollably loud that it effects studying? Or is it really due to your own decisions, like going to the library when it gets loud, or knowing what’s the right time to study?

So from what I’ve heard reading the 10+ odd older threads on dorms, McMahon has the unfortunate distinction of being known as a fairly “unsocialite” resident hall (atleast compared to Lander and Terry). That’s not to say you won’t be making friends, but I’d imagine that most of your time would be spent with the 8 people part of your pod.

I’ll probably choose Lander for the social aspects…and to make cottage cheese without upperclassmen spazzing out about that.

What’s a good choice after Lander, assuming one wants maximum socializing? Is Terry? I don’t know if it’d be good because it’s not just freshman, or are all the residence halls mixed besides Lander?

From what I have heard from past people who have dormed at UW Terry is the best dorm and Lander comes second. Both will give you the same experience since they are connected, but most of the terry dorms are bigger than Lander. Also I visited and stayed the night at Terry and it’s a lot of fun and you are constantly meeting other people. I have another friend who has dormed at McMahon for two years and she liked the dorms, but not the location and the older community members that live close by. So if you’re looking to socialize and be around freshmen I would pick Terry or Lander, which are definitely the ones that I will be putting down as my top two choices.

I hope they place us by location. I’m going to be studying in the Communications dep and since the campus is huge, I’d want to be placed in either McCarty or McMahon. Being placed in Lander or Terry sounds dreadful. Well at least the walk…in the rain. The quality of the dorms are all pretty much the same. As for being in the more social dorm I know that most of us will take classes together. People in your dorm could be in a whole different set of classes and vice versa. I’m concerned about dorms closing for breaks. I like in SE Asia, all the way down in Cambodia. Are we going to have to stay in hotels?
To be honest. I just want to maintain my party life/habit (no drinking age in Cambodia). With the drinking age there I’m not going to survive very long:S

Mercer is being torn down this year I think, so you won’t have to worry about living there.

I live in north campus and personally to me it seems like that most people prefer north campus over south. I’m not sure how Poplar will affect things, but I don’t recommend living there on the basis that it costs $1000 more basically just to get your own bathroom.

McMahon is a fine choice and many people recommend it. Some people say that the cluster setup makes it so that you don’t meet anyone outside of your cluster, but honestly, if you live in a hallway type dorm, you’re not going to make friends with all of your floormates. At the most, you’ll make friends with a couple floormates, with your roommates being the main people you interact with. Because of this, McMahon is decent because the common room makes it so that you’ll have 8~ people to interact with daily. It’s not that great if you don’t get along with someone in your cluster, but that’s not really a big deal. And obviously, the 8 is at McMahon, which is where basically everyone in north campus goes for dinner.

McCarty has the biggest double/triple rooms (not counting Poplar) out of any dorm on campus and is generally a nice place to live in general. Ian’s Domain is pretty convenient for food and the grill that they have that I don’t think any other place has. It’s also open late so it’s great for late night snacks. The internet cafe is used quite often, with many people playing Starcraft, League of Legends, Minecraft, Steam, or just facebook.

Haggett has the hexagonal rooms, I think they’re only doubles, and they have their own closets. Not bad at all, but there’s nothing particularly exciting here. This year they have “Rick’s Cafe” which is an ice cream shop that sells a huge waffle cone for $1 cash. I don’t think anyone hates living here. I guess live here if you desperately want your own walk-in closet.

Hansee is known as the 24 hour quiet hours dorm. It’s for the people who are very focused on studying and need to have their room quiet. Don’t live here if you want to be loud and have lots of friends over all the time.

Lander is freshmen only. Good if you want to meet other freshmen, but the rooms are not as big as McCarty’s. I don’t know anything about Terry, but I imagine it’s similar to Lander, just with more upperclassmen.

How long are the periods between quarters?
I think usually a week. spring break (right now) is a week. Not counting summer quarter of course. I think most of the kids not in steven’s court go back home .

Are the Steven’s Court apartments dorms or apartments?
steven’s court is a dorm/apartment hybrid. Basically everyone shares a living room/kitchen/bathroom. Inside the individual bedroom it depends on what you want, they have a lot of diff setups at diff prices. You can live in your own room, or share with 1-2-3 other people.

Do they have engineers there or would I have to choose between my two passions?
people of all types live here. It’s not separated out by major

I hope they place us by location. I’m going to be studying in the Communications dep and since the campus is huge, I’d want to be placed in either McCarty or McMahon. Being placed in Lander or Terry sounds dreadful.

Two things, regardless of your major…the classrooms most likely will NOT be in the same building as where your major is located. (I have two majors -communication being one of them, and next quarter will be the first that I actually have a class in the communications building). Classes (and especially quiz sections) are all over campus and require alot of walking, no matter where you live. be prepared for that.

as far as distance, lander/terry takes less then 10 min to walk to red square. not long at all. (looks farther on a map then in person). Also, at least for me…most of my classes are closer to lander/terry then mccarty/mcmahon (I actually time my walks)

Sounds like a lot of walking no matter what -_- great haha.

Btw, travelgirl, why do you think Terry/Lander are bad? They sound like the best to me haha.

Steven’s Court is typically reserved for upperclassmen so unless you are a junior or older, you won’t stand a chance at getting placed there.

I have heard that McMahon and McCarty are the best, but then after that I’m not to sure. Check out this website: http://**************.com/university-of-washington/campus-housing/
