I tried searching through old posts for this info, but I know there have been some changes, so I was looking for more updated opinions: Which are the best residence halls? Which one has the most doubles available? Any input or opinions are appreciated
Thanks in advance!

For Fall 2014, the continuing students Soph will be housed in Cuarto. I do not know if Freshman will there also since he has been used for Freshman housing the last several years.
- My S is in the Segundo area; Primero Grove which use to be Grad student apartments.
He has a 3 bedroom all doubles sharing with 5 roommates. Full kitchen and living area with 2 baths.
It is not nearly as social as the regular dorms but really enjoys the space. He did not specify a Living-Learning
community (which I heard we all triples).
Segundo area has several types of dorms including the Honors dorm. Area is close to the ARC and the MU.
Also he thinks they have the best food in the commons. - Tecero has a new phase of freshman dorms that will be available for incoming class. Tecero is more central to
most of the classes but you have the dairy nearby and occasionally you are treated to the “essence of cow”.
The majority of Living-Learning communities can be found here this year. There are a few in the Sequndo area.

My S placed Tercero as his first choice and Segundo as second choice and got into the Sequndo area. The best way to make a decision is to visit. If you go for Decison Day, they will have tours of all the housing.

Oops, I see you said Tecero is the new phase being built as freshman housing. Cool. Thanks!

I apologize for my prior post. Problem with the computer I was using in the formatting and also the typos. Tecero is the newest of the dorms with 3 phases that have been built. I personally like these the best and so did my son, but he likes the Segundo area now that he is living there. Most of his friends that asked for a double got into the Segundo area.

I lived in Cuarto my freshman year (currently a sophomore), and around this time last year they listed sophomore housing as being in Webster. However, it was moved out to Arlington Farm due to the amount of incoming freshmen. I don’t know if this will happen next year with the new buildings in Tercero, but it’s happened in the past at least.

As for occupancy, most triples are in Tercero (currently; I’m not sure about the new buildings but I’m guessing it’s the same to increase capacity). Segundo is mostly doubles, as is Cuarto.

Keep in mind that Cuarto is much different than Segundo and Tercero as far as room layout. Cuarto has suites – you have a living room and 2-4 rooms branching off of that living room. Each suite has at least one bathroom; two if there’s three or four rooms. Tercero and Segundo have traditional dorm housing, where the rooms are directly connected to a main hall and the bathrooms are communal. There’s advantages and disadvantages to both, but it’s something to keep in mind. Also, the cost is the same regardless of which housing area you end up in.

Which halls are the best is completely subjective. To me, Cuarto is the best (specifically Thoreau, but I’m biased) because I love the suite layout. I know others who lived in Cuarto and hated it. Likewise, I know people who loved the other housing areas, and people who hated them. Your best bet is to visit for yourself and make a decision based on what you see. If that’s not possible, feel free to ask about specifics from each area. I’m more than happy to talk about Cuarto, though I don’t tend to be on when classes are in session so as a warning it may take a while for me to reply if you want to hear from me specifically.

Gumbymom already described where Segundo and Tercero are in relation to other things, so I might as well include that information for Cuarto should it be used for frosh housing. It’s off campus, across the street more specifically. It has the U Mall (which has Trader Joes and several other stores) across the street and Rite Aid really close by. It is farther from things on campus than the other two areas, but it’s only an extra few minutes to make it out to stuff; in other words, people tend to exaggerate just how far it is.

As a final note, if you really don’t like where you end up being placed (or have a personality clash with your roommate, for example) you can request a room transfer during the year.
