Residence halls

Which are the best at BU? I was able to see a room in The Towers while on tour, and it seemed pretty small. Are all the rooms about that size?

My parents work at Boston University and have been interviewing students about their preferences since my birth. One of these days, I'll have them dictate their findings for me to post.

The mock Warren Towers room did seem a bit small. If you're a freshman without priority as an ED applicant, it's 99% certain you'll bed there. So, dorm selection may be a moot point for those who flock here in January. That's everything I know, sorry. I will post a full analysis as soon as possible.

Hmm...I didn't see the room in Warren, although it was probably the same size as the one I saw.

Warren Towers = = The Towers as far as I know.

Warren Towers is home to the most disgusting dorms on the planet. For a school that costs 40,000 dollars a year to attend, they don't use any of it improving warren towers. Not only are the rooms small, but they are disgusting and old. Also, in the beginning of september and in late spring, it is SOOO unbearably hot in there...it's difficult to breath. And yeah...most freshmen DO end up there. I guess it isn't that bad considering you can move into a nice apartment off campus the next year, but if you want a nice dorm for freshman year, do anything in your power to avoid warren towers.

Living off-campus is insanely expensive. They just erected a place over the BU Bridge which I expect to rent for thousands a month. If you get far enough away for prices to level out, you'll probably need a car. It takes about 30 minutes to walk the campus end to end at a brisk pace. Driving takes nearly twice that on an average day. So, gas and time become huge costs.

Once you're in the city, you'll need to park. With Fenway stadium nearby (housing the beloved world series champions), parking lots often exceed $20 a day. Sometimes, the reates go as high as $40 down the street from the GSU.

I heard something about the Student Village being beautiful, but I don't know anything else about it. It's on the west campus?

@Chrisso620:

Don't expect any money to go to Warren for some time. As you, the new sports complex is consuming all of the school's resources. I have heard reports that entire departments are being neglected by Maintainance and Grounds because of the mad rush to finish the building.

The reason for the $40,200 or so tuition is the Robin Hood BU admissions system. For those who fit BU well, full tuition is in order. It seems that a significant fraction of this money is re-allocated to pay for students whose records far exceed the institution's expectations. Although few students qualify for scholarship money through their academic records, those who do are well taken care of. It's a slow process aimed at gaining prestige for the university.

Disclaimer: I am not directly affiliated with BU, am not a current student, and generally do not know what I am talking about. What I post is either second-hand information or mere speculation. Despite whatever contacts I have, I am solely responsible for the content of my posts.

Nom- The Towers are on Bay State Road, Warren Towers are on Commonwealth Avenue.

I was looking into Shelton Hall for a while, until I realized that people would be walking across rooms to use the bathroom. Kinda odd, I thought.

Thanks starynight5. I really should know more about this. I hope to have the full residential run-down by monday night.

That would be great. I reeeeally want to know what to stay away from, providing I am accepted that is. ;)

Just a mom here...Most freshmen at BU live in Warren Towers, West Campus dorms (not the apartments...the dorms) or The Towers. The rooms in each are about the same...just plain old dorm rooms with bathrooms down the hall. They are adequate, but not lovely by any measure or means. Shelton Hall is more expensive (check the cost list) as are any of the dorms with suite style bathroom setups. While the freshman/sophomore dorms are...well, dreary...the upper class dorms are worth the wait...nice brownstones, apartments or the like. The cost of living off campus is oppressive, and remember, the lease is for 12 months not the school year. When choosing dorms, pick for convenience to the bulk of your classes. Students in the Sargent School or CAS typically pick The Towers or Warren (personally I find the Towers a better location than Warren which is right ON Commonwealth Ave). Students in College of Fine Arts or College of General Studies typically pick West Campus as those three dorms are closer to the bulk of their classes. West Campus dining hall is like a food court...it's really good. My understanding is that the Warren Towers dining hall was renovated this past year and hopefully it's now more like West Campus (most BU students agree that the West Campus dining hall is the best on campus). Stary...as a music major, you probably want to look into West Campus. It's the closest to the CFA.

Thumper1- Yeah, I picked Shelton because it was one of the farthest from the CFA, so I could walk. ...but I know I'll get tired of that eventually so I'll look into West Campus. Thanks for the insight! ;)

Exercise is good....but...remember too that the practice rooms are located in the CFA, as are many of the rehearsal spaces. If you live in Shelton, you will be hiking a LOT. AND FYI, freshman and sophomore ear training is at 8:00 a.m.

Heh. I'll DEFINITELY look into West Campus then. Which of the halls would you reccomend? Are Claflin, Sleeper, and Rich pretty similar?

My son lived in Claflin last year. He says Rich is better. To me, they all look the same. Claflin and Sleeper are connected by the dining hall. Rich is separate. Rich has the mailroom for all three dorms. The rooms are identical.

Yeah. For some reason I leaned toward Rich when I was looking at the BU website.

Stary...as a freshman you don't get to pick the specific West Campus Dorm. You would list "West Campus" as one of your choices. The school will assign you to one of the three West Campus dorms. At least that is what DS did when he was a freshman.

If you had to pick between towers and warrens, which one would you pick and why?

Well, right now I've heard that both Warren and Towers are horrible so I don't really know which direction to point you towards. From personal experience, I thought Towers was really bad, but I guess Warren is just like it. I'd go with the one that smells less, I guess. lol

Warren Towers is right on Commonwealth Ave. It is noisy...with all the traffic, the T coming and going and stopping, and the foot traffic. The Towers is on Bay State Road. It between Commonwealth and the Charles River. While not a HUGE distance from Commonwealth Ave...you don't have nearly the amount of noise from the traffic and the T. Also, Warren Towers is HUGE. The Towers is not as big. I'm just a parent, but I would choose The Towers over Warren Towers if I had the choice. DS had the Towers as his second choice (West Campus was his first choice). A good friend lived in the Towers for two years and said it was much quieter than Warren Towers. BUT I will say...DS says his friends who live in Warren Towers have met a ton of really great people there.
