Residence halls

When do people that are going get dorms?

What dorm do I want to be in? (Near the rec enter, dining halls, etc.)

My only dorm experience is with Zahm (I have a friend there), and from what I heard that is not a "normal" dorm.

You won't get dorms until over the summer, and there are threads and threads from back then with everyone asking about their dorms :). Don't worry about what dorm you want, you will love the one you are in, truly. I left one of the "best" dorms for one of the "worst" and I am very happy. You will love it, though there may be some downsides like not having air conditioning in some dorms. It is doable though, don't worry.

Zahm didn't used to be a normal dorm but they have been really cracking down on it, so now it pretty much is.

Haha Zahm....my sister has told me some....INTERESTING stories about Zahmbies......heard there just a tad on the crazy side. My sister said that's the dorm I definitely don't want to get into...because everyone else has an extreme distaste for Zahm kids. Haha but I bet it's a ton of fun though if you're in Zahm!! My personal favorites are O'Neill and Alumni Halls. I like the South Quad a bit more. South Dining Hall rocks!

Zahm is a lot tamer these days. Some angsty former Zahmbies have been complaining about its new rector and his strict style in the Observer lately, but nothing at Notre Dame dies easy. It's still one of the most spirited and close-knit male dorms.

I'm in Morrissey - known for having the smallest dorm rooms on campus. But its location is prime for eating (South Dining Hall) and working out (Rockne Memorial). Which are the two most important things, agree?

The only hall about which someone might have a legitimate complaint would be Carroll which as everyone knows is entirely too far away from almost everything. But my guess is you will love your dorm no matter where you end up - it's more about the people that live around you.

You won't find out about your dorm till next summer, like early August or late July.

As a Lyonite, I spent plenty of time in the Manor back in the stone ages. My son tells me, though, that it isn't just the rector in Zahm who's gotten strict, but Morrissey as well. Something about it having gone dry... Is there truth to that?

Those freshman rooms in Morrissey may be small, but those top floor upperclassmen rooms in any of the three--Morrissey, Lyons, and Howard--are pretty nice still, aren't they?

Morissey sounds like a good draw- eating and working out are right alongside classes and football!

Given some of the parties I know, the Manor is not dry...they may try, but it hasn't runneth dry.

Also, Fisher is a much better draw than the Manor. Let's be honest, the Manor is kind of a south quad wannabe dorm...you will see what I mean when you get there. It ISN'T on South Quad! Fisher is literally right next door to South DH and is closer to the rock and DeBartolo...and back in the day was a senior dorm so what does that tell you. We brag of former residents Joe Montana and Regis Philbin. I really don't think the Manor can compete with that.

Upperclassmen (or in Fisher even sophomores) usually get singles in a lot of the older dorms unless they are like me and prefer doubles. The rooms are still pretty nice, just on the small side.

Hey Irish, let's not forget Dillon--on the other side of South Dining Hall. Son has enjoyed being in Dillon, very convenient to just about everything!! He has a 1st floor room, but like you have said, rooms are still on the small side. I do think, though, that the rooms in Morrissey have to be about the smallest on campus. He stayed in Morrissey for the Intro to Engineering one summer. My husband and I thought the room was a closet when we first saw that room. We later learned that it was used indeed for a double throughout the school year. Also, son has mentioned going to parties in Morrissey. Not too much detail, mind you, but I don't think it is a dry dorm!!

Dillon is a genuine South Quad member and a respectable dorm, unlike certain dorms just North of Fisher :)

Regis was not a hall of fame baseball player known for being the last player to hit for the Triple Crown was he?

No.

But I believe Carl Yastrzemski is.

Yaz + Julius Jones of da'Boys > Joe Montana, Regis Lee Gifford

:)..Btw - Morrissey isn't really dry. It's just kept under pretty close quarters. Which is very nice, for me, a non-drinker, and someone that prefers to get some decent sleep during the week.

You still aren't on South Quad hopeful, and you know it! I think you are just in denial about the state of your dorm :). Plus, your dorm is a lot older, so a lot more people have lived there! We have Demetrius Jones in Fisher, he very well may be the starting quarterback next year (I have not conceided it to Clausen).

Please, people. All this and no mention of Sorin College? Wow, you have Yaz and Regis Philbin. Whooptee-doo. We have the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. We have Rocky Bleier, Frank Leahy, etc. etc. etc. Sorin College bleeds greatness. There just isn't anything like the turrets that adorn our mighty castle, or the pride that comes along with saying that you live in Sorin COLLEGE (not hall). Plus the ladies know that Otters are far more cute and cuddly than maniacs or ugly fishermen. Just sayin'.

I'll join in by saying that Brady Quinn resided in Dillon up until this year! And, funny thing, he came by for a visit earlier this fall, walked right past my son, and son, head in clouds I guess, did not recognize him until later when it dawned on him. Guess he looks different in person and up close. Not sure about other famous Domers in Dillon--guess son would know about it!!!

Sorin College, huh? It is too bad your only claim to fame is something that happened during the Vietnam War. What is good is that you recognize it and embrace it. Most other dorms would move on, but I guess that when that is all you have, you have to play it for all it is worth.

So yes, you are Sorin College...and you have triples smaller than my double :). You do have really high ceilings, though, and I have seen very impressive lofts. I will give you that!

You should hope you're put in Alumni, it's the best dorm on campus.

When we went to pick up my son (a Manorite) last Friday, we noticed a hawk perched atop the Manor Spire.

That's right, Morrissey Manor has it's own raptor. Now that's cool. :)

His room, however, is like a jail cell - 8' x 14'. Come to think of it, I've seen larger jail cells.

Kev, c'mon, that support sucks. You could have talked about your rector, or being "center of the universe" (not that you are) but no...weak, lol.

Also, Radionicist...I think I will refrain from asking about your knowledge of jail cells :)

If you are in Dillon, or Alumni, or the Manor.... congratulations on being one of hundreds. If you are in Sorin College, congratulations of being one of the few. Our only claim to fame something that happened during the Vietnam War? That's not really true by any stretch, but if it were, it'd still be a better claim than "look at us, we're the largest dorm on campus. Thus, we're neato!" Comon, folks. Tell us what's so great about these dorms instead of simply laying seige to the castle that is Sorin College.

I live in Fisher, which means in snow storms I go to the dh in shorts and crocks (seriously) because it takes me 10 seconds to walk to the dh. Not bad, not bad at all! Dillon can kind of relate, but I still think for Reckers and South it doesn't get better than Fisher.

It's about 30 seconds from Sorin to LaFun, which is a tad better than Reckers.
