Residence Halls!

Hi everyone...I just decided on GWU yesterday. Now I need to quickly decide on which res hall. Any info would be great. Pors and cons...of each hall. Which hall do you reccomend for an incoming freshman that is serious about school but at the same time loves to be social??

If you love to be social, you should go to Thurston. I think most people at GW are pretty serious about school, though I could be wrong because I'm an incoming freshman too. It just seems like when you're on campus you get a pretty good feeling that people are primarily there to learn.

All the residence halls (with the exception of Mitchell which is all singles) are pretty social. However, Thurston tends to be social in the sense of a party atmosphere. If you want to go out a lot, Thurston is a great place to meet people who will be interested in doing that.

yeah...i also recommend thurston. it can get rowdy sometimes, but there's always the library if you need a quiet place to study.

my favorite is madison. this website has a lot of info on each of the dorms: http://www.gwu.edu/~rpmhome/building.html

what do you think of the HOVA? i'm considering it but haven't decided between that and thurston

HOVA is no longer an undergraduate residence hall. It is reserved only for graduate students since last year. It's sad, because aside from being a fair walk to the center of campus, HOVA is a very nice hall. Daughter lived there her freshman year 05-06, the last year it was used for undergrads.

Most freshman end up in Thurston from what I can tell; even if they request something else. It is definitely a more party dorm; my S rarely studies in his room. In fact he mostly just sleeps there as 80% of the time it's noisy. The rooms are very spacious, but he shares his space with 3 others, who have very different personalities than he. If you need peace and quite, Thurston is not the place at all. Despite thinking those attending GW are "pretty serious about school" my S has found that people play hard in Thurston.

hmmm...i dont know about the noisy aspect, but i guess there always is the library...

Thurston is definitely the lowest of quality of dorms. Somers (on the vern...) is the nicest.

i don't know that madison is much better than thurston, to be honest. plus, i feel like living in thurston is the genuine/typical "gw experience," so if that's what you're looking for...

Madison and Crawford are more centrally located, but I think that my son will request Thurston as a good way to meet people. Maybe after first year, he will want to move to a smaller, quieter dorm!

I have a question about meals: In my day, we had dining halls downstairs in each dorm. This doesn't seem to be the case at GW. I saw the list of Marvin Center dining options...but can someone please tell me where the kids eat breakfast? There seems to be a coffee spot and a bagel place...anything else? Thanks!

I was thinking the same thing, but I am betting that since they all have a refrigerator and microwave, maybe my daughter will keep some breakfast food around for days when there are early classes. I am thinking a trip to Costco for some paper plates and cups with lids and cereal bars, instant oatmeal, etc might help.

there's einstein's bagels, starbucks, dunkin' donuts, au bon pain, and dj's fast break. i personally don't leave much time for breakfast in the morning, and i don't know many people who do...i think most just keep basic breakfast stuff in their rooms.

when do we apply for housing?

you can go online now and do it at the gwhousing portal. you have to have your gwid and a registered email account to get in to register. you can get an email account by going on the website and using your gwid and birthdate to register.

I'm getting pretty ****ed because GW still hasn't processed my seat deposit even though I physically handed it to them over a week ago. It wouldn't be a problem, but I can't get my e-mail address and apply for housing

First, thanks for the information re breakfasts at GW. Second, my son tells me he has had the same problem accessing the housing application using his new e-mail account. He will be calling the school today to see what's going on.

hey, dont worry about being one of the first to apply for housing. gw goes by when you applied for admission. so if youre ed 1 you get priority and if youre rd...well then youll be lower on the list anyways...

my cousin was in thurston last year, now in jbko, told me that it was rated the most sexually active dorm in us.
