Which ones should we avoid? Which are nice/crummy? Loud? Overall which would you recommend? If anyone has visited or spent time in any of the dorms, any input here would help.

There was a thread months ago about this that I didn't want to try to bring back to life, but it does have some good information.

I don't know much about the "living status" @ the UW so it might be a stupid question...but is there a place for jnrs/snrs to live in or are like all the dorms for freshman.

hmm... so after reading that lj website i'm still not sure where i would want to live if i went to uw. for all those that are considering attending uw, which dorm do you like the best and why?

I'm the same as you, rovee. I'm having a hard time deciding because of all the stuff that those people were saying.

I'm pretty sure, however, that I don't want to be in Lander or Terry. I need to be somewhere where I don't have to worry about the fire alarms being pulled once every two weeks.

Anyway, seaissa, this article is old, but it might answer your questions about choosing your dorms.

Hey dreamkissed, do you know what they are talking about when they say that UW is using a new program for assigning housing? There was a brief mentioning about it on the lj site, but I'm still unclear about what they were talking about. Also, does anybody happen to know when the housing application will be available? I want to fill it out and send in the deposit ASAP, because even though I might not end up at UW, at least I'll have everything in early and maybe this'll help if I put a hall preference down. (Are we going to be able to put a hall down as our preference?)

I was thinking about choosing McMahon because I like the idea of living in clusters. However, I hope that the "unsocial atmosphere" these people were saying about McMahon isn't true. I don't know, it just seems like a lot of people didn't like McMahon, but I wonder how many people actually feel this after living in McMahon. I mean, its kind of pointless criticizing a hall if you've never lived there. (But I guess there opinions could be shared by people they know that do live there.)

Which one are you leaning towards dreamkissed?

The (not-so-new when we become freshmen) program that UW's going to be using for housing and matching roommates is webroomz. I haven't really read anything about it other than what I read on dorms memories thing. If you want, I can ask for you though (as I'm part of the UW livejournal community).

I have no idea when the housing application is going to be available. They say on the website that it'll be available in March 2005 so I assume it will be fairly soon. I think they'll either mail/email us about that stuff when it comes up, so I wouldn't be too worried about it. People will probably be talking about it here, even if they don't email us...

And as for the dorms, I'm thinking either McCarty or McMahon. I'm a little scared of McMahon because some of the people on the site were so adamant in their hatred of it, but I think I'd be happier there than some of the bigger freshman dorms. (I get annoyed if I don't have some quiet time every once in a while.) I think McCarty is too new to know anything about, but I gather that it's pretty nice because it's newly renovated. But who knows?

I asked about McCarty on the UW Lj site and I would say "no" to McCarty after reading their comments. I'm not exactly sure what I want right now. Either Lander of McMahon then..?

Awesome, thanks for sharing that info dreamkissed!
(I wonder if there is a way to pay the deposit online...)

Yeah, I don't know a lot about McCarty so I'm leaning more towards Lander or McMahon. I've been inside both and I thought that they were both pretty nice. I've stayed in Lander too, and I really like the atmosphere they've got going on there. I know less about McMahon so I'd appreciate any comments/info regarding McMahon.

Thanks for posting the link to the discussion on McCarty. I'll make sure to check it out when I have time.

Eh, everyone on livejournal seems to have a completely different opinion. For every person who recommends a certain dorm there's another swearing against it.

Most I got out of it was south dorms have more freshman, feel a bit detatched from the rest of campus, and are a tad crummier than the north dorms. The north dorms are nicer, but harder to get into and won't have many other freshman if you do get in.

At this point I think I'll just take whatever they give me and try to transfer to a different dorm if it ends up really crappy. I don't think I even heard anyone who's established incoming freshman will have any say on which dorm they'll end up in. A bit more information from the UW itself would be a big help. Hopefully it comes later.

I think that you can fill out the application online. On the 28th, check the housing website and see if the app is available. I know that's what I'll be doing!

BrettGrannermann, are you favoring any specific dorm?

For all those considering dorm's, when I was an undergrad I lived on the 11th floor of my dorm (not at UW) and loved it, but if I had landed on the 12th floor, I would have hated it. This is why opinions differ so greatly. Someone who loved living on the 12th floor would have hated our floor, etc. When you arrive meet people, be friendly, find some like-minded folks, and show some leadership to make it what you want, ...if possible.

I'm leaning towards McHanon. I think the cluster set-up is pretty cool and they have some really good restaurants down in the basement but any place I up will more than likely be fine. What about you? Can we still fill out the application even if we haven't sent our deposit and stuff? I'm still kind of wavering between the UW, Gonzaga, and Marymount (D.C.).

That's funny, I'm leaning towards McMahon too for the same reasons as you. I like the cluster idea and I've heard that the food is good. I checked out their website and it says that even if you don't know for sure that you'll be attending UW, you should still fill out an application and put down a housing deposit because at least you'll have something reserved. If you do decide to go to another school, you can get a full refund. Are you instate?
