yes, i know im totally jinxing myself by asking about housing already...but, can some current students tell me which hall they think is best for freshmen to room in?

Copper said that he thinks Alabama is the best.

Dobbs has the smallest rooms on campus but i've heard its one of the best. its known for having really cool people. When i stayed with friend who lives there i absolutely loved the dorms, but if you are the kind of person that needs a huge amount of living space its def not for you!!

I wouldn't recommend either of the Turmans-they're so far away and don't have sinks or built-in closets in the rooms. If you're looking for a single, you can either have Turman or Harris, and I'd recommend Harris. But I have heard that the Turmans have awesome, close-knit communities.
All the rest of the dorms on-campus are pretty decent. I only know a few people in Dobbs, and they're nice, but the good thing is that in any given dorm there are a lot of really fun people. The character changes from year to year, at least from what my RA has said. The thing that mattered to me when choosing my dorm was co-ed halls, meaning that there are guys and girls living next door to each other. I think that can change from year to year also.

Big Rooms: Turman, Trimble, McTyeire, Alabama
Small Rooms: Dobbs
Crappy buildings: Trimble, Means, Longstreet
Best proximity: Longstreet, McTyeire, Alabama, Dobbs
Distance: Complex, Harris, Turman (Turman's very far away from things)
Great architecture: Alabama, Dobbs, McTyeire

And yes, I do think the people in Dobbs are cool. Alabama tends to house all the Emory scholars.

I was looking at 360 pics of the rooms on the site. Alabama looks awesome.

Wait, so what is the procedure for securing a room? Also, what is the name of that site where you can talk to people and try to find a roomate?

OH wait, I guess I have to go get in first.

wow, Alabama does look sweet. I don't want to get ahead of myself and start looking through the dorms and saying, "ooh i want this one." I have to get in first.

Same here, but it is something to think about.

Complex and Harris are closer to the library and more of the class buildings, but further from the WoodPEC and the DUC. And Complex has an exercise room, so the distance thing isn't really an issue for either of the dorms.

if you want to get a feel for what the dorms are like you should sign up for an overnight visit where you get to stay with a freshman in one of the dorms for a night. It's a good idea overall since you can get a feel for the atmosphere of the entire school and find out what life is actually like at Emory. I never did it through the school cuz i just stayed with friends, but i've heard a lot of good things about the program. As for the Complex and Harris, I would hate being so far away from the DUC especially freshmen year! and def make sure you get a dorm with co-ed halls, though from what i've seen the majority of the dorms have co-ed halls.

If you get Longstreet, please run away QUICKLY.

That dorm is horrid!

I'm in Longstreet. It's not that bad. r2005, why do you say that?

Longstreet is one of the more social dorms.

means sux

for cooper45's stats, i have to conclude that alabama and mcteiyre are the best.

Cooper45, would you recommend a double, single, or 4 bedroom for freshman?

oops, i forgot the triple bedroom too.

Cooper45-
I went to Emory's Debate Institute the past two summers, and had the unfortunate opportunity of being housed in Longstreet dorms.

From the outside, things didn't seem THAT bad. Yet, the rooms looked pretty dismal (I won't elaborate becaue those unpleasant images will reappear!), and the floors were slushy and damp. I also loved how freezing the room was (thank you, air conditioning?), and the lone sink in the corner of the room added the perfect touch. (tee hee)

After sitting on that floor pulling all-nighters (debate, debate!), I can honestly say that one of my least favorite parts of my experience would have to be.... the dorm room.

Freshmen only have the option of a single, super single, double, or triple. Clairmont is for upperclassmen, and both Clairmonts and Turman South are awesome compared with any freshman dorm room, including Alabama. With any dorm, the size of the room varies so a double in Trimble might be a good deal larger than a double in Alabama, no matter what the pictures look like.

r2005, you have control over air conditioning so you could have just turned the nob to hot. The floors are definitely not damp and the room's aren't terrible at all. Sometimes Longstreet smells, but it's tolerable and it's not even noticeable most of the time. I don't know why you hated longstreet so much, everyone in the dorm loves it. I would have liked a bigger room, but I really got screwed cuz of the layout my roommate and I picked and where I am in the room. But my friend lofted her bed and she has so much space it's unbelievable.

Anyway, an article in the Emory Wheel said that ED 1 applicants went up 18% this year from last year. That's crazy, and it's more than any of the ivy leagues.

cooper45-
I was there during the summer, and, despite the air conditioning "control," adjusting the thing didn't make a damn difference. It was always cold. Granted, it was summer, so that probably had something to do with it.

I'm just going by the experience I had over the summer. Not to say that it hasn't changed (I should have taken into consideration the shift from summer to fall/winter, etc.), but those were the opinions I had.

:)

How are you liking Emory? Are you originally from Georgia/the south?
