Hey guys!!! This thought crossed my mind a lot of times but no one gave me a clear answer. Can you guys tell me if I will get into a prestigious/ competitive residency if I graduate from the UMKC 6 year Accelerated Med Program!!!

Well, residency spots are really given based on your board scores and such, so it’s hard to say. UMKC is really not that great of a med school, however, if YOU do well, I don’t think you’ll have a problem.

Thanks bsmd11!! But can you tell me if Ill have a better chance of getting into a competitive residency if I go to schools like USC, Northwestern, or UC San Diego

Of course you’ll have a better chance. Top medical schools typically do a good job in preparing their students for those boards. However, like I said before, the amount of effort you will put in will really make the difference.

As a sophomore in high school, should nt you worry about the application process as opposed to residencies? It seems a bit premature to plan 8 years in advance.

You can go anywhere from any place. But, why don’t you do a little more research into the goals of UMKC’s program. I don’t think they’re necessarily aim to send their graduates to Mass Gen or UCSF.

Here are the results of the most recent match, in case you were interested:

[Match 2011 : Office of Student Affairs : UMKC School of Medicine](http://www.med.umkc.edu/sa/match_2011.shtml)

The UMKC 2011 Match List does include one neurosurg, several orthopods, an ENT, a derm and a WUStL Internal Medicine among others. This just proves that if you have excellent stats (USMLE etc) from any school, you have a shot at getting into your chosen specialty SOMEWHERE.
We had a PGY2 resident in Radiology who graduated from UMKC. Despite his young age, he carried himself very well, was quite mature and was hands-down, thought to be the brightest by his peers. He was South Asian, with a name that sounds like a lot of those on the Match List.

Thanks a lot guys for the info!!! You guys really nailed my question down!! Never knew that college confidential would have so many helpful people!!! :)

Rushervanilla, when you say, “prestigious/competitive residency” it depends which fields you are talking about. Even Anesthesiology is sometimes considered competitive, depending on which program you’re applying to (community vs. university-based). Don’t go only based off of one match list year. Go off of several years - it’s posted in the UMKC thread and then make a decision on whether you feel that you would be able to get into something prestigious/competitive, based on what is available at UMKC. I think NorCalGuy hit it on point.
