Residency applications?

Jeez.

Step 1 done. Score in. Hurdle jumped. Time to celebrate. Woohoo!! Celebration over. At least the part that includes me. I'm sure the classmates will get a little more. ;)

That vacation was some kinda short-lived.

Having a score has shifted her focus to residency apps.

What to do other than start another thread?

I found some stuff I will link. Hopefully it will helpful to others along the way.

I encourage our pros in the trenches to chime in. Your perspectives are invaluable.

Happy reading. ;)

D’s first area of concern (while trying to stay alive as a MS3) is that she is light on ec’s. She has her research year after MS3 to beef this area up.

She does paid care for a couple of kids with health challenges. Has since MS1. Helps with spending money and she loves kids. Required some special training.

She participates in intramurals. But maybe not as much as she did in college.

She TA’ed Histology.

And that’s about it (that she would categorize as ec’s).

Now, she’s done plenty of shadowing and extra-stuff medically but I don’t think that’s what they are looking for here, or at least it’s not all they are looking for here.

She’ll have research covered (her school requires it) but that is really a separate category.

Of course, Dad’s response was “There is somebody at that school that knows the answer to this question. Find them.”

But, I do agree with her. She has a ways to go in building an EC CV.

Yeah. Yeah. I know. Our Kristin has already done a think-tank symposium and a medical mission complete with para-sites and para-miltary, but that is our Kristin we’re talking about. ;)

Oh, and it dawned on me that my D will be entering the residency match the same year as Kristin, MCAT2’s son, and Miami’s D. So this thread may be around for a while. ;)

Add D1 to that list, curm.

Shouldn’t this(and a few other threads) be moved to Med school topics??

Added to the list, WOWmom. Somemom’s D and steeler and some others are next year. So maybe if we band together, and take advantage of this year’s residency thread, we can make us a nice little roadmap.

Haha, thanks curm. I also direct the nonprofit I started, am on the exec board for my school’s student-run free clinic, manage a few diabetic patients, and am in the process of resurrecting a student organization–but who’s counting? No idea if I’ll do research or not. I’ll probably do some public health/community health/clinical research if anything.

Glad to hear all is well with your kiddo! I’ll have to check through those links when I find the time. Thanks for sharing!

Add my DS to this class too. DS still has no idea of what he would like to be although he is quickly eliminating several specialties.

I can’t remember who it was that recommended the book (it might have been NCG) but I bought DS this book last year:
The Successful Match: 200 Rules to Succeed in the Residency Match

DS has been reading it and he said it had lots of useful info in it.

Ultimately, what’s most useful is talking to the students who are ahead of you and applying into the field(s) you’re interested in. Books can get outdated pretty fast, and hey, nothing’s better than free!

Jeez. I’m spamming my own threads. lol

I found this piece of extrapolated Step 1 percentile data on scores for those entering the match in 2009. IOW, I think if you flunked Step 1 you aren’t included. So I guess these are really “percentiles of those who passed” which I guess again is more helpful in assessing the competitiveness of your score.

Whatever. It’s interesting. To me.

<a href=“Step 1 Score Distribution and Percentiles - REAL DATA | Student Doctor Network”>Step 1 Score Distribution and Percentiles - REAL DATA | Student Doctor Network;

Well, I take that back. It is all applying for the match. Some low scorers were included but why, I don’t know. (Why would you enter the match with a failing score?)

Another sdn chart. This one for 2011.

From a Stanford Residency director’s blog

Oh, heck. I’ll just copy and paste. It’s important enough for all to see. Even those too chicken to click.

I added the numbers. And remember that the 2 digit number is “funky” (not a percentile) and no longer reported if I understand it correctly.

Elimination of two digit score and wordy explanation.

I don’t want this thread to get too far away from me because it is chock full of in the trenches info from ncg. I know P-gal and I watched it like hawks.
