We are NC residents but live in remote area; D goes to boarding school out of state. Last week her counselor tells her that she believes the STATE YOU ATTEND HIGH SCHOOL is what UNC considers, and that she probably won't be considered "in state" for residency purposes. That doesn't seem logical. Anyone have any knowledge about this before I call admissions? Thanks.

It is all based on state of residency; where you pay your taxes.

Thanks. That is what we assumed. We were pretty startled to hear her advisor's opinion on this.

Sounds like her counselor is really clueless which is frightening when you think about it.

well, at least it is not her College Counselor, it is her advisor (as in dorm life). Whew. But I agree with you!!!
