On the application, it asks if you have been a California Resident for more than 12 months.

Just curious, does this actually affect your application in any way? Or just inutile information?

Also, my family has actually moved to California. I stayed behind to finish my last year of high school. I wish to attend Cal. Is there any way this can benefit / hinder me? If not for admission, perhaps for tuition after our family becomes perm. residents?

Thanks.

I’m not sure if there’s an official cap on OOS folks, but the admit rate is significantly lower so I’m guessing it does affect your chances. Also, there was an article a while back on “plans to enroll X more OOS folks” so I’m guessing even if there’s not a hard-and-fast cap there’s a guideline on CA v. OOS.

It’s also a factor in finaid - I believe the 60K promise applies only to CA residents, and finaid will never cover the OOS fee.

If your family genuinely moves to CA you can eventually get in-state tuition. I’m not sure if you can get it right away (if your parents file CA taxes this year) or have to wait until your sophomore year, though.
