just a quick question. for all these combined programs, are the residency matching something to consider? Are some schools much better than others, or are all generally the same?

Also, how can you find out if a school does great in residency matching? I, right now, can't see myself doing anything other than some kind of surgery, so I would want to know about schools that do well in matching to surgery specialties.

And for a school like Wayne State (not the greatest, not the worst), how can I find out about the residency matching (success rate to first specialty, etc.)? This is the combined program I would probably have the best shot at getting into, but I want to know if it may hurt me in the long run to not go to a better med school (if I could manage to do that).

Each school publishes its match list. Google and see what residencies got matched to students from the schools you are into. :)

but these match lists, aren’t they just a list of residencies people got into? I want to know what percent got into their top specialty choice and such, not just where everyone went.

According to a Drexel School of Medicine representative I talked to, the AAMC does not release that information anymore - this information could be wrong however.

ic. I would really like to know about this info. (percent that get into specialty choice and such). I find that this statistic is a better statistic to know that percent matched, because seriously, don’t we all like to think we’d get matched? I think it’d be more relavent to know how likely applicants are able to get into their 1st choice specialty (not first choice program, but first choice residency or one of their top 2 choices).

Well, part of the reason your question is unanswerable is that at most programs you have a few combined program students who enter along with a class of 4+4 students. After that time, they are on the same footing with everyone else (UMKC is an exception bc everyone is combined degree student, maybe NEOUCOM). You’d be best served by looking at actual match lists in the past few years many of which you can Google, to see where people have matched and specialties for each medical school although each class is going to be different on what they want to do, so look at trends over several years match lists.

The matching is for Med. School. How people got into Medical School (thru bs/md pre regular route) is unimportant at this point.
