Residency Question

Hey guys, so I am finding myself really wanting to go to IU, but the only thing holding me back is the OOS Tuition. I have recently been considering moving to Bloomington for a year, so I can get the in-state tuition. Now, I am scheduled to be having classes here in Florida until the end of Spring semester. I was wondering, if I signed a lease on a house in Indiana at the start of Spring semester but continued to take classes in Florida until the end of Spring, would my 12 months still start at the beginning of spring?

(Only reason I am considering this is because rent in Indiana is so damn cheap on the houses) Also, would simply a rental payment for a year be considered proof of residency? Any people who have knowledge in this subject is very appreciated.

Unfortunately, unless you can prove that you are not a dependent (and even if you are not one, but have moved out and gotten married), colleges look at the parents to determine residency until you turn age 23 (and it's January 1st when you turn 23, not the actual date of your birthday. There are a few other exceptions--like if you are already working on a masters' degree, or if you currently in the military and taking courses on the side, etc.

Anyway, here is the worksheet on the FAFSA site that helps you determine if you can be exempt from this requirement:

Dependency Status Worksheet - Worksheet - Federal Student Aid

P.S. This is actually for financial aid, not residency--but it is my understanding that Indiana uses the same rules for determining residency. Also, you should be aware that getting a condo/apartment in Indiana to save money is not a bad idea if the housing market improves from here on--but one must compute in the other costs--commission, upkeep, property management to rent it if you can't sell it--if you decide to pursue this option.
