Residency Status

Hello,

I'm a little concerned about how my residency status is going to affect my admissions and possible scholarships. Right now on WA I am classified as an out-of-state student (I think this is because I am homeschooled), though I live in Michigan (my mom even works at the university!) We filled out the application for in-state residency status a few weeks ago, but my mom called them and they said they haven't reviewed it yet.

Is this going to hurt me in the competition for admission and merit scholarships? According to the admissions person we spoke to, residency shouldn't affect chances of admission, but posts here on CC seem to suggest otherwise. And I am seriously hoping for a merit scholarship, as well.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

They classified both of my kids as OOS for tuition even though they were born and raised in Michigan and both of their parents were even born and raised in Michigan. With my Daughter (older kid), I didn’t even realize it until we got the financial aid package in March (after she was accepted). I made one phone call, they switched it and we had to get a new FA package figured out. With my son, I checked right away and made one phone call and they switched it without us filling out the paperwork. The office I contacted was:
Residency Classification Office
Office of the Registrar
1210 LSA Building
500 South State Street
Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1382
Phone: (734) 764-1400

In any case, they did tell me it hadn’t affected their admissions because they went to Michigan high schools so they were obviously in state. I’m not sure why Michigan has such a difficult time getting this right but it is really annoying.

The thing may have changed since Jan 2014. Now any students going to high school in Michigan for 3 years and graduate will be consider in state for tuition purpose.

I like you, had the same problem last year. It shouldn’t hurt you too much as the difference in admissions quality for instate and OOS is way over exaggerated. You should be completely fine

Thank you, everyone!

Mine was the same way. Have lived in michigan all my life and they said i was OOS. i was panicking but I filled out the proper forms to prove i went to a michigan HS and faxed it and it was fixed an hour later
