Hi everyone,
I'm inching closer to my Associates Degree here in Texas... And I can't wait to finally take my wife and cat and move to Florida to my wife's family...

But as stated before, I'd like to study at UF (UCF/USF will do too as backups if they wouldnt accept me : /), but I just now am going through all immigration proceedings to hopefully get my Greencard this summer and then move to Florida.

My parents would be able to pay for out-of-state tuition, but I'd like to pay for it on my own and first work for a year to become a Florida resident.

So my question is, what kind of proof does the University of Florida (or other Florida Universities) accept to establish residency before the first day of class of the semester applied for?

First, you have to determine if you’re a dependent or independent student (see below). If you are a dependent student, then it’s your parents that must prove residency. If you’re independent, then you must prove it.

They will request voter registration info, driver’s license info and vehicle registration (of the claimant). All documents supporting your legal residence must be dated, issued or filed 12 months before the start of the term.

Yeah I’m independent, over 24 years old and married by the time I’ll apply, so I figured that :D

The thing is, to have a Florida Drivers license I’d already have to be a month in the state to be able to get one, so I would have to live there 13 months or longer before I could claim to be a Florida Resident? Since I have to show them Utilities or other receipts at the DMV to be able to get my Drivers License changed, right?
Or am I missing something here? Or will the lease/utilities signed at the date we moved in be enough to proof starting residency dating back 12 months?

As a transfer student, you don’t have to start in the fall! If you moved in, say July (2014), then plan on attending in January (2016). That would give you 17 months…more than enough time to establish residency. “Stuff” will happen, so you will want to bake in a few more months into your timeline.

Yeah, I know that I don’t have to attend in Fall 2015, but I’d like to already attend Fall 2014, if you know what I mean…
I guess I will see how fast it is going this summer and plan on moving 1 1/2 months before Fall 2014 and if I dont make that, then Ill just plan on Spring 2016… Or look into my options if I could afford one semester with out-of-state tuition by myself…

I just hate not being able to study for so long… :D
