Resident Honors Program 2011

Hi, so I just got the information for the RHP at USC and am going to try applying for this. Anyone applying this year? Or, if you've gotten into the program in 2010 or in previous years, I'd really appreciate information about the program (the application process, what it's like, etc.) Thank you so much for your help.

hii. i got the invite yesterday too, im not sure yet if im applying though. i have to talk about it with my parents, and im still in SAT prep mode (and therefore sans scores) because I thought I wouldn’t need the scores til next fall so i was planning on the december test. Hmm… does anybody know anything about the program? or even the school in general? and also if i apply and get in is it binding? any info is helpful and appreciated :)

From what I read from last year’s thread, it is not binding. I would think it is a “special” RD.

I guess USC sends out invite based on the PSAT scores taken as a sophomore. Does anyone know what the required PSAT score to get invited? My S. got a 230. Also, it does not mention SAT IIs in the letter. Are they required for RHP application?

I wasn’t in RHP, but I know many people who were. It’s a great program and I think it’s one of the best programs USC offers. It’s a great chance to start college early and be among other students that are some of the best in the country. Almost all RHP students receive generous scholarships, also.

Admission is non binding, if you decide to wait a year and apply to other schools or to USC again. As for when/what is required in terms of SAT/SAT II, know that they are used to working with high school juniors who were not expecting to be applying to college yet. If you were invited (or otherwise interested) go ahead and call or email them to ask what you need to apply.

Well, it said on the information letter I recieved that they look for an SAT I score (not PSAT) of at least 2050. And I don’t think you need SAT II scores, but it’d be good to have them if you do.

okay, thanks for the info on the binding part, haha. because im not so sure yet if, were i lucky enough to get in, id be willing to skip my senior year. mainly because of a weeklong tour my orchestra would take that ive been looking forward to and working for for years… agh.

in regards to the psat scores, if your son did well as a sophomore then he should be getting the letter unless he checked the box to not let CB share his info with colleges/other programs. the letter mentions that it was sent because of the score info shared by CB.
however a 230 on the PSAT is definitely enough for him to warrant an invitation, as I scored similarly and got an invite and I know people who scored worse who got invites as well. think about contacting the school or looking at the site because it is a very good program by all accounts.

im pretty sure SAT II is not counted, or at least I hope so. if anyone knows for sure please let me know because mine weren’t as good as I wanted and I was hoping to retake them this year…

also the letter and site mention emotional maturity, does this mean they interview us to assess that?

dancer131822, the application says that an interview is mandatory. However, it seems that there is an option of a skype interview…which sounds cool and awesome (but that’s probably just me).

Oh, and this is rather belated, but thanks for being the first one to reply to this thread. :)

However, they remind the upcoming testing dates for SAT, ACT and PSAT in one letter. I would assume they will consider SAT or ACT with PSAT.

Hey Guys! I am applying to RHP for the 2011-2012 year! I was wondering if you guys could chance me for admission.

I definitely just joined this website at 5:22 in the morning to ask about this. Um, yeah the app’s due next Wednesday and I really want to apply and I have it all filled out… it’s just that I honestly don’t think I’ll get in and I have a horrible fear of rejection. I was reading through the posts on this website and it seems like everyone does perfect or close to perfect on the SAT. The minimum score is a 2050 and yeah, I meet the requirement but not by much because my Critical Reading score is awful (650, I took it twice this fall and don’t remember much from English last year and don’t have AP English until the spring) and my other two are just average (Math- 730 Writing-710) leaving my total at a 2090. My unweighted GPA is a 3.66 but my school does it where an A is a 93-100 instead of a 90-100, and I’ve had a couple 92s and 91s, which count as Bs or 3s. So basically in every other state I would have somewhere around a 3.8 or 3.9 unweighted. South Carolina also does weighted really weird so mine’s a 4.67 I think… but I’m sure it’d be lower in other places. I’ve been a competitive cheerleader for three years and I think I listed maybe 6 or 7 different clubs on my application. Um… I was a Duke TIP scholar and went to their higher level summer camp twice. I’ve been to an arts camp twice- once for piano and once for singing. I’m only 37 in a class of around 700. I feel like I really want to apply but I really really REALLY don’t want to get rejected. So… I don’t know.

Help?

Also on the essays for the undergraduate application, does USC mind if you use contractions/ make it sound more personable? Or are they really strict when it comes to writing style? And is talking about open-mindedness being important to me too cliche? Hahah as you guys can probably tell, I’ve put a lot of thought into this. The deadline is a week from today so any feedback at all would be appreciated? Also, how many people apply to this and is 20-30 people getting in making this an impossible dream of mine? Ugh… I just want to get in more than anything.

Oh and as far as AP classes go, I’ve taken three so far (US History, Stats, World History) and got 4s on my exams.

I’m taking three this year- Microecon, Government, and what my school calls English 4 AP but I think the official name is like English and Composition? I’ve had maybe 4 college prep classes since eighth grade and the rest have been honors or AP. Not that this’ll separate me from anyone else… -________-

This program is for students who are emotionally mature and want the challenge of college courses. Some juniors are ready for college and others have no interest in leaving high school early. There are rural schools that do not offer the broad range of subjects and competitive peers some students desire.

SC looks at the entire application. Scores are not the only criteria for admission.

Are you ready to live away from home? Have you traveled or gone on mission trips without your parents? Do you feel ready for the challenge of college classes? Would the scholarship be helpful to your parents/guardian financially? Do you feel competent to handle the freedom college students enjoy and still complete assignments? Are you open to living with individuals who come from abroad?

There are threads on RHP from past years. Use the search function. The students who are selected for the program appear to enjoy the RHP experience.

Deborah,
Apply. It is not binding. If you feel this is the ideal program for YOU let this desire shine through in your essay and application. Some students with very high scores are not selected and others with lower scores receive that thick envelope. Students are considered individually. Good luck!

At the admissions seminar I attended the admissions counselor stressed using standard formal English in the essay. Think of this as preparation for writing business letters in the future when it is time to do your job search after graduation.

Check for grammar and usage errors. Check the spelling. I suggest reading the essay out loud. Usually an error will stand out for some reason. The “Elements of Style” by Strunk and White is an excellent guide.

I officially applied! did anybody else apply? good luck to all those that applied.

tabla,
All students who apply to SC are not on this board. USC had 35,794 students apply for the freshmen class last winter.

After getting an acceptance and scholarship letter from USC last week, I was really excited! But nothing was confirmed until I got a reply from RHP, and so came the long dramatic wait. But then today, I got another letter from USC! I just got my RHP acceptance letter! What a great way to start off the Chinese New Year! :]

Good luck to those still waiting, I hope you all make it!

Congratulations, both on your scholarship candidacy (or Deans?) and on your RHP acceptance!

Congratulations AllezCho! Did you have an interview for the RHP part yet? I heard it is required this year but I don’t know the details.

Hi user13!

Do you mean the RHP interview by phone? I did receive one by phone, about a week before I got my general Undergraduate acceptance packet (around mid-January).

I haven’t gotten anything… Oh well, guess there’s always next year.
