resident in the state or having U.S. citizenship

i'm currently living in NY. I got accepted in UIUC.

My concern is that if i go to UIUC, then i have to pay $30000 per yr.

(including dorm and eating and stuff)

HOwever if i become a resident of IL, i only have to pay 16000 per yr.

I heard that if i live in the state for 1 yr, then i become a resident of the

state.

so After paying 30000$ in just one year, can i pay 16000 per yr for next 3

yrs? if i live in apartment instead of living in dormatory.

What you are proposing will not work - go to the schools web site and check out the residency requirements - you will be considered a non-resident. Takes more than just living there to be a resident and since you applied as a NY resident - that will determine that you are NOT a resident of IL. Check out what it takes.

This is why they have resident and non-resident determinations.

Part of it is what state you pay taxes in.

Colleges do not make it easy to get resident status. The one year starts after a preponderance of the evidence indicates that you have established residence there. This would include rent, driver license, paying taxes, etc. Some of the college guides have more info on this.
