Resident or Non-Resident? PLEASE HELP!!

Okay, this issue has been bothering me alot lately.

You see, i am a Junior in High School and am about to go through the whole gruesome college process soon. You see i have been living in Connecticut for 3 years now ( i moved from New York) HOWEVER my parents still filed their taxes in New York ( dont ask me why). If i apply to a college in Connecticut would i qualify as a resident since i been living in Connecticut throught my high school years?!?

What do you think?

Well, first you should ask your parents if they consider themselves residents of Connecticut or New York. They may file taxes in two states for some reason. Some factors include which address they use on their federal tax returns, which state they are registered to vote, which state for their drivers licenses.

My guess would be that you are a resident of Connecticut.

It may depend on the individual policy of the Connecticut college you apply to. State colleges may have a different policy than private colleges, though most private colleges don't give a price break to in-state students (all entering freshmen pay the same amout of tuition).

You'll have to be a little more specific about which Connecticut colleges you are interested in, and chances are, you will have in ask your question directly to undergraduate admissions office staff at the colleges you are interested in.

from the UConn website...

Connecticut State Residency Statutes
The following is language from the Connecticut State Statutes regarding tuition charges: (warning, this is a lot of legal-sounding mumbo jumbo ...)

Thank you guys. This has been tremously helpful.

Just to make some things clearer. My parents have two apartment, one still in NEw York and one here in Connecticut. They use the NY address to fil their federal tax returns, as well as state they registered to vote and their driver licenses too. And the college i am interested is Universtiy of Connecticut.

Thanks again!!
