Resident or non-resident?

Hi, I wanted to know how I would be classified by a university. My situation is that I was born in Texas but moved to Mexico several years ago. I’m planning on going to college two years here, and then transferring. I read that I could be considered a resident if my parents were residents. My dad is a resident who is currently working in Texas, while my mom and I live in Mexico (both of us are U.S. citizens). Although they are together, they never got married. He is the provider in our family and visits of once or twice a month. Thanks!

You have to live in the US state where your parent resides and attend school in the US (for a period of time at your residence) to be considered for instate rates.

It has to do with your physical presence in your state of residence. If you don’t live here, you are not considered a resident.

Thank you!

You and your dad need to chack the rules for thepublic colleges and universities in Texas. Each state (and sometimes each college) sets its own rules. In some states the student can live anywhere and it won’t matter provided one parent is resident.

The bigger difficulty for you will be transferring from outside the US. You will need to have your Mexican records formally evaluated by an organization such as wes.org.

I’m not sure that you have to live in the state of you are listed as a dependent on your father’s income tax. Example: students who go to boarding school in a different state and/or live with the other parent in another state.
