I was accepted into the resident scholars community, but as it wasn't my first choice, I was emailed asking if I'd like to switch it to my first choice.

I'm trying to figure out where this will be located, since I'd like to be in southeast/possibly central (somehere close to music area of campus). I'd also like any other info anyone may have...

Thanks for any help or knowledge on this!

The location is where you want it to be. What Residence Scholars is is that you go and do stuff like clean bathrooms, vacuum hallways, etc, for about an hour a week, and get 1,000 off your room I think. Someone was like, "I love this job, i'm getting paid $50/hour for vacuuming! This is going to be the best vacuum job ever!" But each floor, each quad has one I believe. So if you're into the program, they place you where you want to be housed, if that's possible.

Sorry, I gave you some bad information.

If you want to do residence scholars, you will live in the Ashton dorm on campus. The rate is only $2168 per year for your room, about half price of what others are. Here are housing rates:

http://www.rps.indiana.edu/housingrates.html

I was wrong, but hopefully this helps. If you don't want to be in Ashton, I would recommend not doing Residence Scholars.

I'm not sure about Ashton...I like the idea, yet I don't.

I kind of feel like having a roommate is an important part of the freshman college experience. It really integrates you into your class and all. But...on the other hand, it would be so nice to just have my own room! Ha. Plus the money saving is nice. I dunno.

How do u get into the Residence Scholar Program to get that cheap rate?

When you apply for housing, apply for the residence scholar option. I think you need to have a certain SAT score and GPA, and maintain at least a 3.0 throughout your time at IU.
But...I needto keep at 3.0 to keep scholarships as well, so I'll definitely make sure I do that.

I think the minimum SAT score is 1150 (I'd assume that's on the old scale)

What's the difference between a co-op and residence scholars? From reading the description, RS has the same cleaning duties as a co-op, yet they also tack on academic/scholarship requirements. A co-op double room is a few hundred dollars cheaper and located in Forest.

http://www.rps.indiana.edu/housingsavingmoney.html

I think that is the only difference. The forest co-op was my first choice...but it has pluses/minuses when compared with the ashton res. scholar program.
forest...closest to music, bit cheaper, double rooms available(good socially, not so good comfort wise)
ashton...little farther from music, academic requirements to get in, single guaranteed (good b/c of comfort factor, bad for social factor), cheaper for just single but more expensive compared to double at forest.

Those are just my comparisons.

On the rate sheet, it didn't show residence scholars rooms as singles so that's why I didn't see the advantage over a co-op. I would have LOVED a single my first year, but that's because I had a HORRIBLE roommate assigned to me by the University. I switched rooms and roommates after first semester since I couldn't get out of there fast enough...LOL!

So thats the only difference between RS and co-op? The singles?

No: RS has only singles, co-op has doubles and singles available.

HOWEVER...RS you must have certain SAT/GPA to get in, co-op is based on your answers to some questions on the housing app. otherwise, i really have no clue about how they decide for the co-op. but there aren't minimum score requirements.

Then why would anybody want to live in RS if they make minimum requirements for no reason?

Because you want your space because RS is a single. It's much cheaper than any other single out there.

Everyone i've talked to said "Yeah, it's great to have a roommate, but you really want your space to study". I mean, as long as you keep your room open, it's not like you're going to be stuck in your room with no friends.

I'd LOVE to have a single... it avoids 'roommate from hell', and as long as you aren't a social reject, it's not like you're going to avoid making friends.

lol..the funny thing is, i probably am that "roommate from hell" for some people. i'm not neat, i don't wake up easily, apparently i talk in my sleep/sometimes even sing (?). yeah and i basically throw things all over the place. i think i'd just feel bad the whole time if i had a roommate...and since iu doesn't match you with similar ppl, odds are i'd have someone totally neat-freakish that would ust hate me.

haha. sooo that's kinda why i want a single. i'd feel bad for my roommate.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO LOL THIS IS YOU'RE FIRST TIME EVER IN COLLEGE!!!! YOU GOTTA HAVE A ROOMIE MAN!!!!!!!
