AWESOME AND CREEPY...always a good combo. Let me know if/when you do!

Just agreeing with the above posts. The res college system is great and you will always feel connected to your res college. Oh and MOWC is right-- go Hanszen!

WFR all day long

EOL RRF
i mean does anyone party better?

Yes.

:P

Speaking as a Martelian, I've gotta say that a pretty big fan of Hansen '12 kids. WR? Not so much.

Sid Rich parties hard. When 80s happens, it will be amazing! Death from Above!

Another Martelian who helped with the UFO here. :P

Anyway, the residential college system is great. Not only do you develop a sense of pride, but you're also not in a room that's only next to other freshmen - it's easy to meet upperclassmen to make friends with or get an idea of what's coming up in classes you might be taking sometime soon. During Ike, I had one or two OC people living with me, and I think some of them were getting subsidized food from the servery up until the end of last week, so they're not neglected either.

Can't speak for Hanszenites, but the '12ers at Will Rice and Sid are awesome (don't know what this says about me as a Martelian, silentsailor)!

OH MY GOD, ALL THESE PEOPLE I KNOW BUT DON'T!
I don't know anyone from Sid extreeemely well (though my Screwdate's allegedly from there) so I'll defer to you that judgment. My impression of WR'12 is that half of them live away from WR as often as possible (notably a large group that chills at Martel) and half of them stay at Will Rice, only drunk, because that's the only way they can deal with their rooming situation...

(Yes, guys, I'm kidding =P

mostly)

why have i never heard of a party at will rice or hanzsen?

PROHIBITION this Saturday at Hanszen!! First public party since Ike! Better see y'allz there! HFH!!!

Has anyone else noticed that Weiss and Jones seem rather underrepresented on CC?

As a Hanszenite, I heart Brown. Martelians are pretty cool too.

Umm cuz Will Rice chooses to spend its money on ourselves and not aiding the inebriation of our fellow Rice students, so we dont have public parties. We prefer to mooch off of everyones beer...and I've noticed a lot of martel and jones people around WR. Best avg. GPA for a residential college and best in beer bike...thats how we roll.

Translation: Will Rice is lame.

Um, average college GPA hasn't been released to the student population in more than 5 years. Brian Gibson's office keeps track, but those statistics haven't been published in quite some time.

The res college system sounds great, but as the mom of a high school jr looking at colleges, I'm wondering what effect the living situation has on kids who don't drink and party. Is there much else to do on campus? What about someone who wants to sleep and not be in the middle of party central? I know that Rice does not offer any substance-free housing.
Any words of wisdom out there?
Thanks.

martel isn't a college...i think thats worse than being lame

You're free to think whatever you want.

BengalMom, I haven't had a drink since I've been here and I occasionally go to parties and I think Rice is great. There are a lot of different kinds of people and there are always people to hang out with. I don't know about other colleges but at Baker it has been really nice because there are some rooms that are just known as party places and the coordinators did a nice job of putting people who like that kind of thing in them and those who don't in other places that are better for them. As long as a person doesn't judge others for drinking, it's really not a big deal if you don't feel like doing it.

There are plenty of ways for non-drinkers to have fun. I haven't partaken of any alcohol either, and I'm having a great time. Martel (like Baker, and I'm pretty sure all of the colleges) sorts out rooms to put partiers away from the quieter ones, even at the freshman level. I've felt no pressure to drink, and I find things to do besides partying, like going to a club meeting, hanging out with friends, or (on really bad weekends) doing homework. That last one isn't something I enjoy doing, mind you.

(but truthfully, I admit that the MOB is my anti-drug and I do football games and food runs and hanging out instead of going to parties. There. I've admitted it.)

I feel I should be helping to defend Martel, but no snappy comebacks are coming to me. Except for the obvious better food and restrooms without keypads.

I think that whenever the "martel is not a college" line is brought into play, the argument's validity flies out the door.

And lol, Westsidewolf, I'm pretty sure I know who you are. But then again someone figured out who I was the other day so it's all good...then again, one of my posts on another thread flat-out gave it away to Martel people.

(Confirming the seperation of partiers from non-partiers: the Martel freshmen hexes, Sid's 7th floor, Wiess's 4th, Hanszen's 3rd old section, WR's long hall...the list goes on.)

Tikimoof, I'm in MOB too...

And yeah, coordinators do a pretty good job of compartmentalizing partiers and non-partiers. For Sid and Brown, it's basically by floor. For Hanszen, since we only have two main floors in Old section, each region of the floor is somewhat different, though there is no actual separation between the areas. I don't know about the other colleges.

Basically, if you don't want to drink, you don't have to, but be forewarned that it is a rather large part of the culture here. Though I'm sure that's true for most college campuses, so whatever.
